JEE-Main

Joint Entrance Examination, more popularly called the JEE-Main, and erstwhile Known as the All India Engineering Entrance Examination or AIEEE; is a competitive examination conducted by the CBSE or the Central Board of Secondary Education. This competitive examination was introduced in 2002, and since then it is held at the national level for the purpose of admission to numerous undergraduate engineering/technology and architecture/planning full-time on-campus degree courses in India. The JEE-Main score is accepted by 31 NITs or National Institute of Technology-s and 23 IIITs or Indian Institute of Information Technology-s.

AIEEE was renamed in April 2017 as JEE-Main. The test was typically organized on the last Sunday in the month of April and results were declared in late May or early June of the given year. After being rechristened as JEE-Main, the test is conducted on the first Sunday in April. Aspirants are provided with an AIR or All Indian Rank as well as an SR or State Rank.

From 2019, JEE-Main will be conducted twice a year in January and April, and will be organized by the NTA or the National Testing Agency in place of the CBSE. 2 Retakes for JEE-Main will be allowed.

Why should you opt for JEE-MAIN

  • One needs to qualify in JEE-Main to appear for JEE-Advanced
  • JEE-Main test score is accepted by all the NITs, IITs, state, and also a large number of state, and private universities

How is JEE-MAIN different from JEE-Advanced

Only the best of the best candidates, the ones qualified for JEE-Main, are eligible to appear for JEE-Advanced. It is no surprise that JEE-Advanced is even tougher and harder than the JEE-Main. While only the IITs use JEE-Advanced score, JEE-Main result is utilized by all the NITs, IIITs, and also a large number of state, and private universities. Hence, the scope of JEE-Main is much broader than that of the JEE-Advanced.

Syllabus of JEE-MAIN

The curriculum of JEE-Main (physics, chemistry, and mathematics) is based on syllabus prescribed by the Central Board of Secondary Education or CBSE for 10+2.

Eligibility for JEE-MAIN

Candidates who have cleared 10+2 or equivalent examination in 2017/18 or those who are to appear in 12th standard or equivalent examination in 2019 will be considered eligible to sit for JEE-Main: 2019. Those students who have cleared 12th standard or equivalent in 2016 or before and those who are going to appear in 2020, such applicants will not be considered to sit for JEE-Main: 2019. Also, those who have not cleared their class 12th or equivalent examination in a single attempt in 2016 are also not eligible to sit for JEE-Main 2019.

It is compulsory for students to take a minimum of five subjects in 12th standard or equivalent examination to be eligible to appear for JEE-Main: 2019. Those five subjects for B.Tech/BE aspirants, as prescribed by the CBSE, are as follows.

  • Language
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Chemistry/biotechnology/biology/technical vocational subject
  • Any other subject

Those students who have taken and appeared for four subjects only will not be considered to sit for the JEE-Main: 2019. Such aspirants must take mathematics and physics as compulsory papers and chemistry/computer science/biotechnology/biology as any of the optional subjects in the qualifying examination.

No minimum pass percentage is prescribed for JEE-Main: 2019.

The prescribed pattern of JEE-MAIN

  • Common for paper I & II
    • Duration: 3 Hours, each paper
    • Type of questions: MCQ
    • Marking scheme
    • Every correct response: 4 Marks
    • Every incorrect response: -1 mark (negative marking)
    • Not attempted: 0 (zero)
  • Paper I
    • Subjects: Physics, chemistry, and mathematics
    • Total number of questions: 90 (30 problems, each subject)
  • Paper II
    • Subjects: Mathematics (MA), general aptitude (GA), and drawing skills (DS)
    • Total number of problems: 82 (30MA+50GA+2DS)

Registering and scheduling the JEE-MAIN

Registering for JEE-Main

  • Visit the NTA portal and open the “Apply for JEE-Main” link
  • Read all the displayed information carefully
  • Now put a tick on the checkbox and click on the hyperlink that says “Proceed to apply online
  • Populate the authentication form with all relevant information including your name, Aadhaar number, nationality, etc.

 Filling the online application form

  • The system will automatically redirect you to a new page where you will be required to fill up the online application form
  • Fill the form will all the necessary details including your name, name of your parents, your date of birth, etc.
  • Create a password in the final step and click on “Next”
  • You will be redirected once again to a new page; where you will be able to review your information before submission, and in case of any errors, remember to make necessary changes to the submitted data using the “Edit credentials” option
  • If everything is OK, click on “Final submission”

 Uploading one’s photograph and signature

  • Click on “Upload scanned images” and submit your scanned photograph and signature in the prescribed formats
  • Click on “Preview” and look for any errors, for which you need to restart the image uploading process from the very beginning
  • If everything is alright, click on “Final upload,” and proceed to pay the examination fee

 Paying the examination fee

  • Select the payment mode; such as debit card, credit card, electronic challan
  • Review the application form and make necessary changes, if any
  • Make the payment and click on “Submit”
  • Multiple submissions from a single candidate will not be considered
  • Print out the acknowledgment page (need not be sent to the JEE-Main secretariat) for future reference

 Slot booking for CBT (computer-based testing) candidates

  • Once the examination fee for JEE-Main is paid online, the applicant will be required to book a preferred slot for the CBT
  • Select the preferred date and the preferred examination center
  • The center code, center name, test date, capacity, occupied, and also the remaining slots will appear on the screen soon thereafter
  • Confirm the examination center, date, and the slot as well
  • Print the acknowledgment page for future reference

How to access JEE-MAIN score

  • Visit the JEE-Main portal
  • Log in to the system by providing JEE-Main roll number and date of birth
  • Download and print out the result for future reference, as the hard copy will be required at the time of admission and counseling process

The validity of the JEE-MAIN score

The score is valid only for the academic year JEE-Main is conducted.

Top schools accepting JEE-MAIN scores

While the IITs or Indian Institute of Technology-s consider only JEE-advanced score, all NITs and IIITs take JEE-Main score for their admission process. In addition to these NITs and IIITs, a large number of state and private universities accept JEE-Main score too.
