St. Xavier's College B.Com Review By Arvind Karnani

I am an alumnus of distinguished St Xavier's College Kolkata and will always vouch for it as the college is a 150 years old college and follow a convent style of teaching. Only the toppers will have a chance to take admission here as the cut-off are as high as anything to get enrolled to this college. You may not get a wow factor here as it will be the same school kind of stuff here as you will have to maintain discipline and there’s no room for other things other than studies. Saint Xaviers University Kolkata does host a handful of events but all those are reserved for the ones who are talented or the ones who have proved their mettle in studies. I was somewhere in between and had to enjoy all of these from bleachers. It’s just a one compound college but still is one of the most sought-after as the management has utilized the small little place to the maximum. All your friendship goals, will be sidelined as the college will make you inclined more towards career goals.

SXC Kolkata is known for this element and talking about my course B. Com (Hons), it is one of the flagship courses of the college. The course of B. Com was structured very tightly indeed and there was no way that one could cut loose. There was an all-inclusive learning experience as the ancillary subjects of B. Com (Hons) helped us in detailed learning. Attendance is strict and for the ones who are pursuing CA or anything else the college conducts the evening college for them. For a regular students the rules are totally different as it is a different ball game altogether. No one at the college will come and say, g and have a ball as we were kept occupied for the entire season.

Some of the brightest and in-depth knowledge possessing people taught us the course. I was quite happy with the kind of faculty provided as they had decades of experience behind their back. They got the monkey out of our back as they made us get out of our comfort zone. No subjects could have been avoided and each subject had the correct faculty assigned to it. I shared a great bond with them and even today I am in touch with some of them.

B. Com (Hons) placements were not that great. There’s no denying the fact that B. Com is half the job done and to polish that PG is must. Some students who were in need of job took the sales officer and marketing jobs as they were the only jobs presented to us by banks and insurance companies. I never had that agenda and therefore opted out of it. St. Xavier’s is one of the most reputed college and even if you fail to get a campus placement the college name will help you apply for job elsewhere and also get that job.

The college doesn’t have a hostel of its own. It is located in Park Street that is full of students and all you need to do is take a walk down the lane and you will see 100s of PGs around. There are many private hostels as well for both boys and girls near the college area and are also very reasonable. The college has attracted crowd from Pan India and for all those who are coming will never be complaining about getting accommodation in Kolkata and that too at a price that is easy on pocket.

First the area as Park Street where the college is located is one of the most happening areas of Kolkata. The commutation facilities are again fantabulous as you have metro station nearby and the bus facility to any corner of the city at less than 500 meters from the college. Saint Xavier College Kolkata infra consists of a small compound and 2 buildings in the campus. There’s a garden besides the college building that was it as there were no sporting facility or anything. The building is huge though as the University has numerous courses under its belt and all are conducted in the main building. There is a one huge canteen in the college that had long queues. The Auditorium was great as all the college events were held there. The seating capacity though was not more than 500 and luckily most of the students avoided coming to the fest as the auditorium wouldn’t have accommodated the entire strength of the University. Infrastructure is not that fancy but has all the things like canteen, auditorium, library and a medical emergency room.

It is pride to be called a Xaverian and I carry this badge with a lot of pride. As a part of the curriculum, participating in social causes was not mandatory but if we don’t participate it may affect our internals and hence had no choice to be a part of all such programs. The communication between teachers and students and juniors and seniors was amazing as everyone welcomed each other with open arms. Jumping from school to college was no different as the education style is the same and it was like a good 3-4 months break before our school got over and we are going to a bigger school.
