Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce B.Com Review By Munirathinam Kumar

Symbiosis or Symbi has attracted the maximum outsiders in Pune. Started with a vision where people from different corners of the world can study together today boast students from various countries of the world. Symbiosis without a doubt is the college for which people long for and thankfully the number of seats that it has also allowed students to enroll easily. I joined the college in the junior college and completed my graduation from here. The college gave us enough opportunities to discover all that we want as it has sports club, drama club, debates club, and NCC among others. Symbiosis is not just about studies but gives you an opportunity to explore all your interest and the management had backing of it.

I will divide academics in 2 parts like the one in junior college and senior college. In junior college, the college was quite strict and made sure that students attend the college and also scores well. The junior college followed Maharashtra State Board and the senior college was affiliated to Pune University. The junior college timing was in the noon and 70% attendance was compulsory and I didn’t knew that and bunked classes purposely. But 6 months later I got a letter at home regarding my attendance shortage and my parents gave a perfect beating to me for that.

If you pass your H.S.C., you are given a direct admission to senior college and senior college was exactly the opposite. I couldn’t reveal this then but I can say it now that I have not even attended 10 lectures in 3 years. Just followed the practical submission schedule and attended those. Still I cleared my B.Com first class. Thus, for academics I was happy with the way college was governed, as they left in on students to do all that they want.

The faculty was dedicated and qualified at the same time. If students actually approached them they were always ready for help. But that is if someone approaches them otherwise they didn’t bothered much. The number of faulty was also quite high as there were specialized teachers for each subject and the only time I interacted with the faculty they told us that don’t ruin college name and make sure you at least pass in the exams. The faculty though was supportive if we pursued other interests. Made sure we had their backing in all the endeavor we had.

Placement in B.Com in today’s world is highly unlikely but still since it is Symbiosis, some companies did hire some students. TCS, some banks were among the ones who used to come and hire few students and offering them peanuts. Many students that I know did took the job as they believed at least they will be working in the top corporate.

Talking about the package then it was of 12-15k per month and maybe it will be 20-25k now but trust me on this out of 600, only 50 students have been placed. I still remember the placement cell people coming and informing us to gear up but only few of them actually decided to go for interviews. However there were enough internship opportunities for us.

There is just an NRI hostel of which first few are girls hostel and rest are boys hostel rooms. The hostel rooms are provided only to NRI students or to somebody who comes through approach. The hostel building is great but I haven’t seen it from inside as outsiders were not allowed. From what I learned that there was a common mess area and also volleyball ground underneath the hostel where we all had access. The outsiders used to stay in flats and PG’s near the hostel as there were numerous flats available near the college campus.

All the newly built Symbiosis has a vast campus but ours was quite small. In that small campus 3 colleges were accommodated that is ours, Law College and SIMB (Symbiosis Institute of Business Management). It was a 100metre walk from the gate to the end of the hostel and that was it. The 2 wheeler parking area was inside the campus and 4 wheeler parking area was a bit distant.

There were as many as 3 mess in the college, 2 inside the campus and 1 just outside the campus known as NCC Canteen. All the canteens food was amazing and my lunch was usually there only. The classes in our days were tradition but with time things have changed as we had a reunion in 2017 and many new things are in place now. However, the campus still remains the same, the same energy, and the same vibes.

How can I rate this as the campus is undoubtedly heaven on earth. The time that I have spent on campus is something that I will never forget. I passed out 7 years back and still feel it was yesterday. The friends that I have made will be my friends for life. The jam sessions during the start of the year and on occasions were something that I can never forget.
