The Gandhigram Rural Institute [GRI], Dindigul Tamil Nadu was established in the year 1956 as Deemed to be University Educational Institute to provide higher education to build a career in the field of Engineering, Management and Humanities. GRI is approved by the reputed AICTE and UGC, and is accredited by NAAC-A.
The Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) is a pioneering institution providing higher education to the rural sector. The institute was founded in 1956 following Mahatma Gandhi's revolutionary philosophy of ‘Nai Talim’. Currently GRI is managed by the Ministry of Education, Government of India and is funded through UGC. It has earned the status of ‘Deemed To Be University’ in 1976 and is accredited by NAAC with “A” grade. It is also approved by AICTE.
Vision: The institute was set up with a vision to promote casteless and classless society via education, research, and extension.
Mission: Its mission is to render knowledge support to the rural sector to make them start in a self-supporting, independent, and autonomous society.
Various degrees ranging from Diploma to Doctorate level are provided by the university in its eight schools consisting of eighteen departments and nine centers. The following are the eight schools offering courses in various disciplines operating under GRI.
Students interested in taking admission in the university must first consider the eligibility requirements for the course they wish to pursue. Upon confirming fulfillment of the eligibility requirements they should fill the application form for the NTA-Common University Entrance Test (CUET) mandatory for admission to all UG and PG courses. Moreover Choice Based Credit System will be followed for admitting students in UG and PG courses. If any seat remains vacant after the CUET exam it will be filled on the basis of 10+2 marks in part-III subjects and also on the basis of reservation policy. A separate notification will be issued by the authorities for admission to Ph.D courses. For the rest of the courses including Diploma. Post Graduate Diploma, and B.Voc programs, a separate application is to be submitted online for admission.

Eligible reserved category students will be awarded scholarships at GRI. Students can avail the Central Sector Scholarships available on the National Scholarship Portal if they satisfy the eligibility requirements for the scholarships. Also SC, ST, SCC and PwD students are exempted from remittance of Tuition fees if they submit the prescribed application form at the time of admission. Some of the scholarships offered by the university are Post-matric Scholarship for Students with Disabilities, National Means Cum Merit Scholarships, Scholarships for Top Class Education for students with disabilities, Central Sector Scheme of Scholarships for College and University Students, etc.

There is a Placement Cell at the university which has the responsibility of finding relevant jobs for its students that suit their desires and needs. Students are trained by the cell to make them ready for the corporate world and to develop them as the future entrepreneur leaders. From training till the students are placed in the reputed companies, the Cell assists its students in every possible manner and conducts various activities throughout the year.
As a result of the constant efforts of the Cell many leading companies have come to GRI campus for placements and have selected qualified candidates for different positions. Some of the prominent recruiters of the university are MRF Limited, SGS India Private Limited, Lotus Pharma Distributors, Usam Technologies Solutions Private Limited, Kwality Dairy Private Limited, Spatial Decisions, New Delhi, Trimble IT Technologies India Private Limited , Anjan Drugs, etc.
GRI campus is located about 10 kilometers South of Dindigul town and is nestled in between the Sirumalai Hills on its east and Kodai Hills on its west. The campus also has many historic monuments of its own along with the natural beauty and the rich biodiversity. It has developed its own Energy Park housed with all kinds of renewable energy generators. The campus is also well connected by road and trains and a guest house facility is also available for the parents, visitors, and guardians.
