Coorg Institute of Technology B.Tech Review By Supriya Tupgaonkar

Coorg Institute of Technology is where I decided to pursue my undergraduate degree. The college opened in the year 1999, and it is associated with Visvesvaraya Technological University. The college is approved by the AICTE and it is headed by Basavaraj sir who is the principal. The college has won awards for many things such as for being environment friendly. Coorg which is also known as Scotland of east doesn’t have just coffee but some good colleges too and CIT is one of them.

So coming to the academics, the eligibility criteria is that you must have passed PU or the equivalent of it with a score of at least 45% in the subjects of maths and physics. There is an entrance exam that you will have to attend. You can apply through an online application, and you are placed into the branch based on your scores, etc. and I joined because I would like to be involved in construction and transportation. The teaching here did meet my expectations, and I got to understand my role and how to carry out that role as a civil engineer. Academics will definitely take up a lot of your time here, so learning to manage your time is the only way to be able to have a life outside of academics.

There are a total of about 40 faculty. In my department, there were 8 teachers. Most of the teachers have an average experience of about 4-5 years, and almost all of them have their master's degrees. The teachers here stay focused on new improvements, and they teach us current things. This is helpful because there are always so many innovations and new ways of doing things that keep coming up. One thing that faculty in my department were very open to was students coming to them to do projects. I really recommend you choose a guide and do a project. You get to learn a lot about the field, and you can get research knowledge. So, make use of this.

The college has a placement cell that also organizes training in the final year of college. The placements start before your final semester, and companies that come to the college are like Honeywell, Infosys, and Wipro. The average starting salary is about 3-3.5 lakhs per annum. The highest in my batch was 6.5 lakhs per annum. Most of the students who were trying for placements got placed. I went on to study further, so I did not sit for placements. However, I did sit for placement training, and that helped me when I looked for a job after my masters’ degree and had to attend interviews. As per Coorg, the placements were fine but in relative terms, it was quite less.

The college has multiple hostels for girls and boys. You can get any type of occupancy from single to four sharing. There are beds, bunk beds, tables, and chairs provided in each of the rooms. There is also hot water available throughout the day, and Wi-Fi is there. The rooms are pretty spacious, and there are shelves and cupboards provided. The food is mostly south Indian, and I would say that it is average. Housekeeping comes every day in the morning. There is security that is there all day and night outside the hostels. The hostels are also equipped with CCTV cameras and any mishap is noted. However, students staying in the hostel are all well-behaved and no mishap or anything was ever seen or heard.

The college has pretty good facilities. There is a computer center with about 40 computers, and you can use it during college hours. Wi-Fi is provided throughout the campus which is also helpful so you can get connectivity everywhere. Apart from this, there is a playground which people use for different activities like running, kabbadi, and football. There is also a room in which you can play indoor games. There’s a two-floored canteen on campus, and you can come here for a quick snack or a heavy lunch. There is also a chaat place located adjacent to it, so you can check it out as well. There is a post office on the campus itself, so this is helpful, you won’t have to travel anywhere for this purpose. There is a gymnasium on campus that you can go to all days of the week. One more thing I shall like to add is the scenic beauty of the city can be seen through the college. The college has enough greenery inside and outside the campus as well.

The campus is pretty good considering academics and facilities. However, there isn’t much to be a part of outside of this. If you are athletic, you can go for sports. There are not many fests or extra-curricular activities to be a part of. One thing you can get involved in is research which can be interesting. However, festivals and occasions were celebrated with a lot enthusiasm and even the smallest of moments looked so big during the college days.
