I knew that IIT is not my cup of tea but NIT is what I was targeting for. My mains were miserable and I made it a point that I won’t leave my city if I haven’t got the college of my choice. Faridabad also has a lot of engineering colleges and YMCA University now known as JC Bose University is one of the best that we have in Faridabad. YMCA has always promoted quality education and when I tell someone that I am a passed out of YMCA people also say that YMCA is a good college. This does satisfy me and the placement that it has provided me has satisfied me even further. If we rule of some of the faculty members other were quite good. The college has many extra-curricular activities at its doorstep that if we take all the things in reckoning then JCBoseust can compete with the top institutes of the country. The college is beyond one’s comfort zone as one has to push hard because the faculty won’t give you much of a helping hand but by doing so you will learn how to be self-sufficient and how to manage things on your own.
The academic part is strict and in fact very strict. Above 75% attendance in each subject is required otherwise I have seen people not allowed to sit for exams. Some extra subjects such as environmental science were included in CSE and that baffled me and many. I got a C grade in that while 90% of the class got A grades. This was not just one-off but every semester we had one such subject and even after scoring over 8 pointers in the main subjects, my average dropped all the way to 7.4 because of these extra subjects. The academic stricture was nice as at the start we were given a module and that was followed and that gave us a nice break before each semester exams.
Some of them were exceptional while some pathetic. I once asked one of them a question and she said just Google it. They also considered themselves as Sarkari Babu and took classes only when they felt like taking them. Let’s ignore them as they were just a few but the rest others were always available and their teaching method made learning so easy. Faculty members possessed all the knowledge of the world and shared them with us.
Placements were great but only the ones who deserved got the placements. One with a GPA of less than 7 missed the cut but those who maintained that got the opportunity to impress the HR associates of recruiting companies. We were given tips and proper training which was paid by the way to help us answer the questions being asked during the placements. The average was near 4-5 lakhs which was decent I guess. YMCA doesn’t guarantee placements below 7 GPA so if you are joining this college make sure that you study hard and get the required pointers.
There are 3 boys hostel with a capacity of 120 students each and 4 girls hostel. Girls hostel capacity I can't remember as they had 3 and 4 sharing system as well. The boy's hostel rooms are allotted purely on double sharing and the 3 wings of boys' hostels are named Nehru Hall, Zakir Hussain Hall, and C V Raman Hall. The girl's hostel buildings were also named after legends like Kalpana Chawla Hall, and Mother Teresa, and 2 more. Every boy's hostel had 2 common rooms that had TV and some sporting facilities. All the floors had water coolers. The hostel had CCTV cameras and 2 security guards at any point in time. The food because I never ate it won’t be right on my part to comment on that. One strict rule was that students were not allowed to take the food to their rooms and they had to consume it in the mess hall.
JC Bose YMCA University campus is big and 27 acres campus is a great deal. Each section has its own blocks and there are 5 in all. All the buildings are more or less the same and I don’t know if it has been inspired by some fort or red fort because the buildings will remind you of that. The library is big and is opened till 8 pm. Students are allowed to take their laptops inside and do the project work at the library. There’s a party hall at the campus called Shakuntalam. I agree the name doesn’t give the vibe of a party but most of the names at the campus were out of the box. The college's busiest area is LC (Lal Chowk) which has been renamed to Kalam Chowk. All the fest meetings and students gathering happened at LC. There’s a part just outside the girl's hostel and if a boy is seen wandering at the park the security will not just scold them but may end up getting suspended as well. The college's main ground which is a playground but the college's star night, the yoga fest, and convocation or any other party were held at the main ground. There’s a canteen that has a bucketful menu but rubbish. Mother Dairy outlet was a better choice which is also located inside the campus.
There were over 10 clubs for sure but the most active among those were SRIJAN, and Aanya. Once you are a member of those clubs then you can easily have a proxy for the attendance. The clubs were so influential. The events at the colleges were such that those moments are now ingrained in my memory forever.
