Govt. College of Nursing B.Sc Nursing Review By Asrar Ahmad

I am really happy that I studied in this college. I got selected in this college through a scholarship called ‘PMSSS’. Initially, it was difficult for me because the people here mostly speak Malayalam and I had no idea about the language. But after the second year I became very interested in studying here. The Government College of Nursing, Kottayam, has its own attached hospital where we can see a large number of different medical and surgical conditions. The teachers here are very qualified as professors and associate professors. The infrastructure is really well developed. This college recently got the QAS accreditation of A+. I would prefer to study M.Sc also here, because of the good infrastructure, better teachers, and better environment for studying nursing.

Basically, the selection used to be on the basis of 12th merit. The persons who are eligible to write the entrance are those persons who had Biology, Chemistry, and Physics in their 12th class. The motive for getting the admission is that when you do nursing, you will become a regular and a really good professional, where it is easy to get jobs, especially in the foreign countries where there's a lot of demand, so yes, if you're doing nursing, you can easily get a job and you can earn 90000 or more per month. The motive behind admission is that you can help the people who are in need and the other thing is you can earn a lot of money and it's easy to get job in foreign countries as well.

In a nursing college, it’s not easy to get a teaching job because if you want to teach in a nursing college, the basic degree that you must have is B.Sc plus M.Sc. The teachers who teach us are highly qualified professionals. They themselves have studied nursing in reputed colleges, since the syllabus is devised by the INC, which is Indian Nursing Council. They also provide the guidelines for teaching. For example, they tell teachers what methods should be used for the teaching and what are the components that have to be covered in a particular subject. The teaching is more like an active process rather than passive.

No, not really. We don’t have Placement Cells in nursing colleges.

A hostel is available, but currently it's fully occupied by the students. So, if any students are coming, they are asked to stay outside in private hostels or take a PG room. However, if any of the rooms is vacated the new students are allowed to stay there. The hostel has all the facilities such as the kitchen rooms, washrooms, bathrooms, and then security room. Then there are some other rooms for playing, praying, etc.

In my college, there is a separate block for GNM and a separate block for B.Sc Nursing. The B.Sc Nursing department has different labs, classrooms, computer labs, teacher’s rooms, washrooms, etc. There is also a big auditorium for all the students. There is a park nearby. This college of nursing also has a bus service.

There are many unions in our college one of the unions is College Union, another one is SNA and another one is KBNSA. Students can join these unions through election. These unions are supposed to conduct different non curricular activities or extracurricular activities. Some of the activities are cultural fests, sports meet, etc. We celebrate almost every health day and we conduct different music programs.
