BMS College for Women M.Sc Review By Maridula Ehsan

M.Sc is one course for which it’s hard to find good colleges. BMS College for Women was one of those but was indeed overrated than what it was in actual. From Miranda House College, DU to being a part of the college affiliated to Bengaluru Central University, the shift was a lot different. Bangalore being my hometown and college close to my residence, it was a choice made out of circumstances otherwise, and I would never recommend it to anyone. The placements are decent but other than that there are some complaints with regards to the college. For girls, it is better than the other private girl's colleges in Bengaluru but still needs some refurbishing. I am saying so because the quality of methodology and professors' teaching was not quite up to the mark or maybe I raised my expectations high because of my graduate college. The laboratories and workshops were not well maintained. Events were nice as BMS institutes students participated. This was the most significant exposure as not major industrial visits which should be there at the M.Sc level were missing big time. I will give you an in-depth scenario of BMSCW, and I hope it helps you choose the right institute.

In terms of strictness, Bangalore colleges should rank number 1 in India. It’s not just about the attendance, but what we wear also mattered. If we are a little off the radar, we will be called and scolded for not following the so called protocols. The syllabus was so vast that practicals were skipped but not the theory classes. The college management was adamant that, if possible, students should be called on off-days to complete the syllabus. Not worth it at all as many students were Christians, and they skipped the extra classes on Sundays and were marked absent, that added to their total attendance required.

Most of them followed the old techniques and were not cooperative at all. Still, one word for the newly hired faculties as they were much supportive and guided students the way they wanted. If the entire faculty that has been sitting here for decades is changed, at least this part will be solved. Practical marks went from the college, so they were skipped as it won’t hamper their college's result at the university level. The faculty were assigned duties by top management that they need toppers at any cost. Thus, studies were compromised somehow, and the faculty played a prominent role for that.

At least placements were decent because the BMS group is a renowned one. Many Bangalore companies like Jenburkt Pharma, Biocon and others which were our core companies hired us with immediate effect after the final exams. The package guaranteed at the campus were around 5-6 lakhs, and for M.Sc student it wasn't very pleasant but that’s all we get. So at least on this part, the college was alright as getting placed for me was the whole idea of joining this college.

The hostel for BMSCW was at the BMS College of Engineering campus. Both the colleges were nearby, and the college did arrange transportation facilities for the hostel students. I was not a part of the hostel, so explaining the hostel life won’t be possible for me. However, for outsiders they can join the BMS hostels as they are arguably one of the best in the city. From food to rooms, they are all one step ahead of the other colleges of the city.

The school styled benched in the classrooms was annoying as one bench would see 4-5 girls accommodating. The modern teaching techniques were installed, and that made learning with new techniques possible in the classrooms. For experimental activities, the labs were not fully equipped. Don’t know about the other departments, but the Chemistry labs lacked facilities. The canteen was quite small, and besides that there was an old tree, so it was under the shade throughout. The college has an open auditorium and it was used for several purposes. Mostly during felicitation programs but all the college events and fests were held at the open auditorium. There were washrooms on each floor of the building and also one change room in each floor. There’s a small Xerox center at the building that made things convenient not just for students but also for teachers. The infrastructure, on the whole, was ok-ish because it was way below other institutes of the group.

I was so active with the societies during the graduate program but not anymore as college societies at BMSCW sucked. The front runners of the societies will never take anyone’s opinion and will do all on their own. The cultural event which was the only co-ed program for BMSCW was amazing. I didn’t participated but went all the way to watch it. Even my friends from other colleges asked me to favor taking them to watch the event UTSAV. For me going to college was like performing a duty because the college hasn’t offered anything new that I can boast about.
