NSS College of Engineering Campus: Where Nature Meets Innovation

This college (as well as many others in Kerala) comes under the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University. The atmosphere is great, surrounded by mountains and greenery. The campus is also large, spread over a 100 acres, giving students a lot of room to explore around. Olavakkode Railway Station is close to the campus, which helps in cutting off travel expenses. Most of the older faculty here are very experienced, having completed their Ph.D from reputed universities. They are also quite friendly and approachable.

Enrolment in NSS College of Engineering is done via KEAM exam that is conducted every year The college provides six specializations for the B.Tech degree, those being Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Instrumentation and Control Engineering. I chose Electrical and Electronics department. This college is one of the very few under this university providing ICE course. For students under General category, it is advised that the student need to have a rank below 10,000 to get a EEE, CE, ME or ICE course, with the CSE and ECE courses requiring a higher rank, with cutoffs being as high as below 4000 rank. There are also management seats in this college.

My department has a lot of very experienced faculty, with most of the permanent staff already having a PhD (if not pursuing one) from reputed universities in India like IITs and NITs. Many of the older faculty members also have over 20 years of experience in the education sector. The teaching staff is very friendly, and is very knowledgeable in their respective subjects. Most of the faculty members also ensure that the students understand the concepts well, and are receptive towards solving doubts.

The college has a Placement and Training Cell and is very active. Lot of renowned companies like TCS, Accenture, Siemens, IBM, Cognizant, and many others make rounds every year conducting placements for students. Placement rounds start at the beginning of 4th year for students, and are placed by the end.

The campus of NSS College of Engineering is spread across a massive area of over 100 acres, and consists of mainly three blocks: Administrative Block, New Block, and Alumni Block. The Administrative Block consists of a few classrooms, mostly reserved for first year students. The rest of the students are housed within New Block and Alumni Block. There are separate blocks for labs, and they are well equipped with instruments that are maintained up to the mark. Most of the classrooms are also equipped with projectors, and air conditioning is present in labs that require them. Aside from the department libraries housed in the various blocks, there is a separate library block as well, with a Central Library, that allows students to read both physical books (both for reference and entertainment), along with e-books as well. There is also a canteen, where students can chill out after a long day. The college is also surrounded by nature, and has an inviting look at first glance.

The campus life can be vibrant in this college. There are a lot of clubs for all sorts of interests, from professional societies like IE (I), IEEE, ISTE and the like to hobbyist clubs like Celestia, the space club, a Reels club, FPC, the photography club, AARC, the aviation club and so many more. The college also has two NSS chapters with outstanding records and achievements. The College Union makes sure to conduct programs every occasionally to break up the monotony of classes. Some of the special activities are Dyuksha: the tech fest, Noopuram: the arts fest, Sports fest and various others. The union also dedicates programs for events like Onam and Christmas, to a Fresher's Day. However, sadly, the nightlife is not very vibrant as the campus closes down almost completely after 4 PM, with only certain groups and clubs staying back. This is also done for the security of the students.
