SNLC B.A.LLB. Curriculum: From Constitutional Law to Cyber Law

Surendranath Law Institute (SNLC), Kolkata, stands as an esteemed Institution rooted in history and heritage, offering a strong foundation for legal education. The Institute has created numerous luminaries throughout the years and continues to attract students from the nation and beyond. Admission in SNLC is based on the result secured in the entrance exam which is conducted by Calcutta University. The B.A.LLB. program spans five years and includes diverse range of subjects and topics which mainly includes constitutional law, arbitration, cyber law, IPR and many more. The pattern encourages critical thinking and ensures that students easily understand the fundamentals of law. Classes are quite interactive. Professors incorporate case laws, current events and historical perspective in their sessions and lessons. The students of SNLC also get ample exposure and hands-on experience of moot courts and debates. They also get chance to have interactions with practicing judges and advocates. Students are encouraged to do internships. They also help the students to secure internship opportunities at Kolkata High Court, district courts, law firms making it easier for the students to develop their skills.

SNLC's faculty includes highly educated professors, many of whom are retired judges or are practicing lawyers. Students are encouraged to think critically and develop their speaking and communicating skills, often engaging in spirited classroom debates. Despite the teaching style being more traditional, the professors are quite friendly and are eager to assist the students with their doubts, their questions, assignments, and other queries including proper career advice. SNLC also invites guest lecturers and organizes multiple number of seminars to enrich its education pattern and academic offerings. Just few days back, a seminar was arranged where numerous dignified people from an NGO who are currently working for the rights of trans genders visited SNLC and created an insightful and informative session for the students.

SNLC does not have a structured placement cell, but due to its location in Kolkata, it offers numerous other opportunities for internships and other forms of networking. Students of SNLC work as interns under reputed senior advocates of Kolkata High Court, legal firms and different kind of NGO’s. Those who plan of pursuing higher studies and also those who are interested in judiciary are also given proper support and help from the Institute and also faculties.

SNLC does not offer any residential facilities due to its location in the middle of the city, but students can find affordable accommodation near the Institute. The Institute makes sure that the students feel welcomed.

The Institute was built quite a number of years back with the classrooms that depicts its legacy. Though there are limited air-conditioned halls and high-tech moot courts, but the library is an epitome of books, journals and other legal resources that are very important and essential for different kind of legal researches and legal studies. Renovation of the Institute has been done to provide modern facilities to the students but its historic charm has not at all been destroyed.

The student and campus life of SNLC is enhanced through the academic and cultural clubs of the Institute. This namely includes Debate Club, Legal Aid Cell, Moot Court Society and other Literary Clubs. The Institute organizes multiple events, intra as well as inter-Institute competitions so that the students can showcase their talent. The students also get to participate in multiple fests organized by other Institutes. Students also get the exposure to the city's legal and cultural landscape. The Institute is situated in the heart of Kolkata.
