Loreto College: Campus Life and Experiences

Loreto College, located in the heart of the city of joy, provides top-notch education when it comes to the Arts field. With its lush green surroundings, the college creates a soothing atmosphere for the students. The college is just 2 minutes away from the Maiden metro station, which makes it the most accessible institute for the students. The principal of the college has the determination to motivate each of her students to achieve the best. It provides highly qualified professors who know the matter well. The college has a canteen, which makes life of the hostlers better. Loreto College courses are mainly available for the ones who wish to pursue arts but they do have combination courses such an Economics with Mathematics for Psychology department that helps them secure B.Sc degree. Apart from the subject courses, the college also provides training courses such as TTC (2-year course) and B.Ed (2-year course).

I chose B.Ed, which is a 2-year intense course. It is a full-time course where classes begin from 8:30 AM and end at 4:00 PM. The students who enroll for this course need to be very determined from before because of the amount of pressure that they will need to handle. To get admission in this course, you need to secure minimum 50% in your university exam (after graduation), you need to have one school subject, as your method subject and you need to have an Honors degree in your undergraduate level. If you meet all the criteria mentioned above, then you can go ahead with the exams. Once the admission form is released, fill in the details, attach the necessary documents asked for in the form, submit the form after making the payment, and remember to take a print out of the form. They are a total of 4 semesters and each semester ends with an University exam. Apart from this, professors regularly take short exams during the course period to keep knowledge of the students fresh. The course contains topics that focus on dealing with pupils of the current the day and age. There are regular seminars held where well-known faculties from college/universities from all over the world are invited to share their expertise on current affairs. This course will give you hands-on experience on dealing with various complex situations that will strengthen your problem-solving abilities. The course aims at holistic development of its student teachers and prepares them for the real world.

College fee structure for B.Ed: Rs. 40,000 (annually). The monthly fee was Rs. 2800. Since the fee is comparatively less, there are no special discounts available. The registration fee was Rs. 1,000 (During my time in the college).

Faculty consists of top-notch professors who excel in their fields. You can depend on the education provided by them without having any doubt. The professors are recruited after the completion of their PhD. They give full support to the students with their research work throughout the tenure. The practicals that are held outside college are arranged by the professors where the student teachers are involved in taking initiatives of doing the preparation for the same. This helps the students to build practical knowledge of how they need to manage situations once they pass out of college. The student to teacher ratio is 50:1. The teachers make sure they help the students all the time. My experience has been wonderful. I can proudly say that I am a student this college because of the professors and knowledge that I have acquired from them.

Hostel facilities are not provided by the college. However, outstation students will be assisted by the staff members with information about available hostels in and around the area.

Infrastructure comprises of lush green environment where inmates can breathe fresh air and live healthy. 5-storied building stands tall in the middle of Middleton Street capturing the eyes of the passer-bys. The classrooms are well ventilated, with big black boards, big wooden chairs and tables, soft boards for current affairs and any updates. It has an ICT department, accounts department, a big library, staff room, principal office on the first floor. The college has a concert hall and a seminar hall where departments can organize different programs such as: seminars, fusion show, debate, annual concert, singing completions, drama completions, and so on. Loreto College library is one the biggest attraction of the building with over 1000s of books (both academic and non-academic). The library also has access to internet allowing students to do research online. It is open until 5pm and pupils of other campus can also avail books by making a library card.

My overall experience in Loreto College Kolkata has been that of gaining a bag full of knowledge. Whether it was from the exceptional books that I read from the library, from the professors or be it from the seminars, I have left the campus being a better version of myself. you can expect a decent crowd in the campus. There are around 7 to 8 clubs: LTS, drama club, debate club, Spicmacay Society (fashion club), music club, dance club, etc. that are all involved training the members for the future. ‘Samagam’, the annual fest is held each year by the initiative of the student’s council where students from colleges from in and around Kolkata can participate and show their talents. If your are taking admission here, then be prepared to leave the campus with memories in bulk and knowledge in tons.
