Government Autonomous College B.Sc Review By Sudhansu Panda

It was basically during Covid-19 that I missed every opportunity to get admission to a reputed B.Tech. College. Then I thought of giving it a try at GACR, as I have an interest in chemistry and want to know more. But to my fate, I missed filling out the SAMS Form to be eligible to take entry there based on the 12th examination percentage. Then during the second selection, I applied for the same and got it in my first round. Since the cut-off here is high in almost every stream of Science Honours, as it is the second-best college in Western Odisha. Thereafter, my journey started. They have some good faculties and strict anti-ragging norms & policies. My exposure to the co-curricular activities couldn't substantiate it as it varies for day scholars & hostellers. But the huge negative point that disappoints me is about the exams, it should have been every 4-5 months but here it's like every 2 months. Hence, this makes it difficult for you to focus on any Government Exam preparations. The placements here are not up to the mark. I have hardly seen any good company visit the campus. Even the ones that visit are so random nothing to do with the branch you study. For Example, HDFC Life Insurance had a recruitment notice for students of every branch.

My course is Chemistry Honours at the Government Autonomous College, Rourkela. For entry into this course, one needs to fill up the online SAMS form and also get a good aggregate score at the 12th level. It includes 2-3 phase-wise selections with an additional spot selection but the criteria are that one should fill up the SAMS Form and take admission in the College that you get in your first round so that afterwards if want to get into GACR you can transfer the money and certificate in the next selection round and the spot rounds. The eligibility criteria is that one should have passed the 12th Examinations with at least 60% marks to be able to apply for the SAMS Form. My motive mainly is to explore Chemistry as it has a lot of scopes. My main goal is to have a Master's Degree in Applied Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry as the plethora of options you have after like in the forensics, pharmaceutical industries, teaching etc.

The faculties here are supremely talented and have topmost degrees. The teaching atmosphere is friendly and lenient here. The cooperation of the Lab staff with each student, if he/she hasn't done their assigned experiment, is commendable. The HOD of the Department has this carefree attitude & treats students like her own, it is a rare sight to get away with. In short, there's no compromise, at least on the college staff recruitment here & the way of teaching that just sublimes in these past 3 years. Most Importantly each of them possesses a different character which is just one of many reasons to appreciate and get to learn something from them. I am going to miss each of them with a heavy heart by the end of my last semester.

No, we don't have any placement cells. Even the companies that come are so random like HDFC life insurance staff recruitment for every B. Sc. Honours department.

I am a day scholar so it's difficult to explain the atmosphere, lodging, food, and infrastructure. By the looks of it seems below average at every rating but obviously, it's the memories that stay.

The college is likely to expand. New branches are being made with the inclusion of new academic blocks too. The plan is to make the College into a University. It will eventually take its time but by the looks of it and the branches like MBA, Mass Communication, and BCA it's likely to attract more students in the coming years. The time I have spent here, it had some cool wall art and a nice auditorium that would capacitate nearly 300 students at a time. It does not have those high towers but decent academic counters, blocks, and hallways.

To be very honest campus life is so strict. The crowd is always there but it's the management that's making no difference. The Students here are very amiable and mostly belong to the western Odisha region. The reason for it could be that the only college better than this is out of this district. As far as fests are concerned there is none and cultural showdown & activities are a rare sight. Having said it many times to the official authorities, it rang no bell on their deaf ears. Inter District, Zonal Competition, debates, and sports are conducted there.
