Gokhale Memorial Girls' College is affiliated with the University of Calcutta. There are 16 different undergraduate courses that you can enroll for. There is no admission test required to take admission into the college. The eligibility criteria were simple and easy to meet. However, your higher secondary marks will be considered during the time of admission. The higher your rank on the published merit list the better your chances are at securing a seat at the college. The better the percentage of marks, the higher the occurrence of the applicant’s name on the merit list, and admission is strictly based on merit.

Well known professors are appointed by every faculty. If you want to prepare yourself for jobs, do not forget to enroll in this college. You will experience disciplined college life, and you will be asked to follow a few simple rules and regulations put forward by the administration of the college. The best part about this college is that the fees is very affordable and the quality of education is very impressive. The experience at Gokhale Memorial Girls' College will develop your personality and make you competent for endeavors that you take over in the future.

I am from the science stream and I had mathematics, physics, and chemistry in class 11 and 12. In college, I decided to join as a student in the psychology department. Department of psychology demands an aggregate percentage of 75 in higher secondary education. No admission tests were held. A merit list was published and ranks were awarded to applicants. Psychology is a multidisciplinary subject and it teaches an individual a lot about life. Most problems faced by people are a result of some kind of subconscious conflict. Therefore, I aimed to educate myself about the subject and become a psychologist to help people improve their mental health.

At the time of taking admission, the applicant is asked to select two pass subjects along with the honors subjects. These pass subjects should be studied for the first 2 years of the 3-year course. There are different subjects like sociology, economics, English, and political science from which you have to select two as your pass subjects. Once this course has been completed there are several job opportunities that will now be available to you. However, to become a professor or a psychologist courses like post-grad and M.Phil should be taken up.

The number of faculties of teaching staff changes every year. This is because every department hires new part-time professors every year. There are three permanent teaching faculties in the department of psychology. During the three years in which I had attended college, each year about two to three guest lectures were appointed. Every year a few guest lecturers are hired in every department. There are 52 professors across 16 departments and 2 librarians. Every professor is highly qualified and has had years of teaching experience. Most of these lecturers have an M.Phil degree in their respective subjects, as well as a Ph.D. Some professors have diploma degrees as well. Every professor has more than adequate knowledge of their subject and can adapt to new teaching methods as and when required.

Lecturers at Gokhale Memorial Girls' College use different techniques in class. Some professors use the lecture method, some ask students to take down dictations and others use audio-visual methods to teach students. They are patient and are always ready to help their students. Though some professors prefer a certain degree of strictness, they never compromise on the quality of teaching. After completion of the course, students acquire an in-depth knowledge about their respective subjects and are able to cope up with the curriculum of other universities.

As this college offers undergraduate degrees, the chances of placement are slim. This is because students are required to enroll in post-graduate courses and M.Phil courses. Apart from that, to become a professor, one needs to qualify for a few competitive examinations. However, some departments like the Department of Advertising, Sales, and Promotion, Department of Nutrition and Department of Communicative English provide some placement opportunities. Companies or organizations do not visit the college with the purpose of hiring. The courses provided by the college demand further education in the same field in order to secure place in a company. Therefore, the package provided or the average number of students who received placement is out of the question.

The departments that do offer placement usually conduct the process through emails. Therefore, the campus is not visited by companies. Almost 40 percent of the students in the above mentioned departments have received placement in the year 2020. Sometimes, students are able to get a job during the second year of the three year course as well. For more and better job opportunities it is recommended to acquire a Post Graduate, M.Phil and Ph.D degree.

Gokhale Memorial Girls' College has two hostels. Young Women’s Christian Association, a well-known organization, has collaborated with the college in order to provide accommodation for students who come from different parts of the world. Many students who take admission are not from Kolkata and therefore require a local accommodation facility. The two hostels are located a few kilometers away from the college, within walking distance. The location of the hostels is Burns House 134, S.N Banerjee Road Kolkata-700013 and at Gallway House 1, Middleton Row Kolkata-700071.

There are a few eligibility criteria that need to be met in order to apply for hostel facilities. The first criterion is that the applicant must be unmarried. Second, the applicant should be within 18 to 25 years of age. Third, she should pursue a full-time academic course at Gokhale Memorial Girls’ College. The number of rooms available for students differs every year. The quality of food is good, nothing extraordinary. One good thing about the hostel is that the staff members always follow a strict schedule. The hostel staff take the rules and regulations very seriously and they do not entertain any excuses for breaking rules.

The college campus has two buildings. One building is called the Main Building and the other is called the Science Building. Classes of arts and social sciences are held in the main building whereas classes of pure science are held in the Science Building. Gokhale Memorial Girls' College has a well-furnished library. Rare books, ones that can no longer be found in India are available in this library. Students usually spend hours in the library going through books and taking down notes. The library has a central air conditioning system. A computer laboratory is also present on the college campus. The departments of physics, chemistry, psychology, and geography have their laboratories with two lab assistants in each department.

An auditorium is also present within the campus. It is centrally air-conditioned with a comfortable seating arrangement, a gallery, and an incredible surround sound system. A small playground is available on the campus best suited for badminton. A cafeteria is present as well, where quality food is available at an affordable price. Snacks as well as lunch are available. First aid kits are always available at the office. An ATM is located just outside the college campus in case students need to withdraw cash.

Gokhale Memorial Girls' College prepares women to survive and make an identity in a very competitive world. Adequate training is provided to every student so that they are able to cope with the demands of different types of jobs later in life. The college supports and encourages students to participate in activities, however, some departments do not allow their students to participate in inter-college feats. However, other departments motivate their students to get as much exposure as possible.

Every year a sports event is held within the college campus where different departments compete. Annual exhibitions and poster making competitions are held as well. An annual concert is held as well in the college auditorium. Students from different departments come together and participate in the concert. Dancing and singing events are held and students are encouraged to showcase their talents on stage. At the end of the three-year course, the college awards medals and certificates to students who have had excellent attendance in all the 3 years and who have excelled in academics. Throughout generations, Gokhale Memorial Girls' College has empowered women through high-quality education.
