Christ Church College B.Sc Review By Kanak Gupta

Christ Church College is a heritage college in Kanpur; it was established some 150 years ago in the year 1866. The college was started by Britishers and the heritage is still maintained. I say this because the college is strict and provides supreme education. The college has its affiliation to various universities in the past but since 1966 it has its affiliation with Kanpur University. The college has students from all sections and religion and the myth that has spread across that they promote Christian culture is all false. No one imposes anything on the students and students and teachers live in the college campus with harmony.

Talking about how to get admission here is very simple. Your 12th result is the only source and if you have scored well, you will get the admissions. Like I am pursuing B.Sc and my 12th score was the only thing that was taken into consideration. The students come from all backgrounds and hence you will find students coming to college on cycle to their own cars. The crowd is great and so are the teachers. No complaints in regard to studies as the teachers never push students to the limit but do make sure that University ranker has to be from the Christ Church.

The college is affiliated to Kanpur University and the syllabus is in accordance. The course for B.Sc though is quite tough and sometimes we do feel drained. The classrooms are well equipped and so are the labs. The attendance is compulsory but they are ways through which one can mend those rules. At max what happens is you will be asked to call your parents and they will show your attendance list to your parents. Thus you will be allowed to appear for exams and all the warnings will be thrown in a flash. Look, we all are dependent on tuition as attending college won’t help score good numbers and therefore I along with my friends have enrolled at classes.

The practicals are always a fun session as we are mostly distributed in groups and it’s the group projects that are a part of practicals. Overall the college is good academic wise like I do believe that while in college the students have to study themselves, Therefore, I would rate the college heavily on academics as there are not many loopholes and the college has done reasonably well in this regard.

The professors in the college are friendlier than the students. When in doubt, you can approach them. They are always up for help and are a great company to be with. The faculty make sure that the portions are completed on time and that students have at least 15-20 days to revise and in those time if all the students come up with same issues, extra classes are conducted.

The professors are readily available and the questions papers set by them during prelims are enough to pass in the University exams. The faculty makes sure that each student has attended the required amount of practical as those are non-negotiable. The marks for practicals are sent from college to the University and therefore faculty is strict on those.

Sadly though but true that B.Sc don’t offer any placement as it is just a gateway to post graduation course. The post graduate program though has great placement opportunities. Look let me be honest as the companies have started visiting our campus and the post graduate students don’t leave the campus empty hands. However, the packages are in accordance with Kanpur city and therefore don’t lay your expectations too high.

Thus for graduate programs the college doesn't have any sort of placements and if you want placements, you will have to pursue post graduation from this college.

Again sad that the college don’t have its own hostel. Having said that many outsiders come and study in our college and accommodation has never been an issue in Kanpur. Shree Parshva Boys hostel which is near to college is a great option.

However, if you don’t want to stay in hostel, there are numerous PG options. PG options in Kanpur are not like big cities where you will be given separate flats and all. In Kanpur, there’s a bungalow system paying guests where owners will be staying down and will have a separate staircase that will lead you to your rooms. At INR 1500-2000, you will get many PG’s.

Well, well, well, the college infrastructure is modern. The college may be 150 years old but was renovated few years back and today the college is stocked with modern infra and has all the amenities that students in general seek. Well all I can say is that college infra has made student’s life ‘go-easy’ during college hours and kudos to college for that. Some facilities that are provided by colleges include ventilated classrooms. All the class rooms are huge and built in accordance that it reaches sunlight and is well-protected during winters. There’s a huge recreation area.

In the building next to admin block there’s indoor games facility as it has 2 badminton courts, for table tennis tables and a small gym. It is mostly occupied as there’s not much to go in Kanpur and therefore even after bunking spending time in indoor games building. In addition to indoor games, the college has 2 huge playgrounds. One is mostly occupied for students playing cricket and the other one is for football. Many students feel that they look cool when they play football and that is why that ground is also mostly occupied. However, the place that is seen with highest occupancy is our college canteen. The canteen is big and can accommodate 200 students at a time. Canteen is certainly our go-to place and this is where we take long breaks. The college campus area is decent and is well-equipped.

The campus life at Christ Church College is great. As I have already said that even if there’s a mass bunk, we are still in college only. There’s decent seating area and the security makes sure that no one ill-behaves with anyone. Any form of violence is taken seriously as during my 1st year, some students started off verbal and then went on to fight. The principal has to step in and suspended the students from entering the campus for 2 weeks. Everyone is treated equal at the campus by teachers. I make sure even if I am in not the mood of attending lectures, still head to college and have fun with friends at the college.

Teachers are friendly and so are the students. The seniors too are very helpful and I will admit that I have learned a lot of new things at the college. Thus, I have enjoyed my every bit at the college thus far and am looking forward to attend the campus again. Hopefully the pandemic ends soon and we will again have the opportunity to go have fun with friends at the college campus.
