Sivanath Sastri College B.Com Review By Riya Singh

The Sivanath Sastri College, also known as South City Morning College, is known to be one of the best girls' colleges in the city. The college has been named on the dictated historian Sibanath Sastri due to his efforts towards women empowerment and education during his time. The college comes under the Calcutta University and is graded A+ by NAAC. However the interesting part is the college is neither a government one nor a private one, it is half aided by government and half private, which yields it and its students a lot of benefits.

The college is mostly popular for the B.Com Hons. (Accounting and Finance) course which is why I joined it in the first place. The college, like all other colleges, doesn't have any entrance exams for this particular course. One can easily fill up the form after her results are out and get the admission if her marks come under the cut-off. It takes the aggregate percentage of the top scored four subjects into consideration. The subjects offered in the course by CU are pretty good and will be helpful in long term for people in Accounting field.

The college has ten professors in the B.Com department itself while there are more than thirty professors for all the courses combined. All of them being the best in their field. There are professors who earlier taught in the St. Xavier's College (Kolkata) holds a PhD in Accounts and were themselves rank holders in the University exams during their time. However, the only shortcoming here is most of them are not very fluent in English, like they won't take the class in English or even if they take, they will speak wrong English sometimes and you have to bear with it.

You can't rely on government colleges for nice placement opportunities in this field but the college has its own perks for being partly private. There hails few of the most reputed companies like Deloitte, HDFC, etc. and a lot of local ones for placement during the sixth semester. The problem is in the fact that the reputed companies only take the cream of the entire batch, for example, the students who has scored the highest during their college life and has strong extra-curricular too offering the packages of Rs. 2,00,000-2,50,000 LPA, which isn't of any value these days. So unless someone has financial problems, no one sits for the campus placement.

The college doesn't have any hostel facilities for its students, SIGH! Though it doesn't matter much as the number of students from outstations in the college is less than a percent. However, it would have attracted more students from different states and towns if it had a nice hostel.

This is the worst part about the college. The infrastructure of the college is really poor but better than almost all other government colleges. It doesn't even have a ground for sports of its own. The classrooms are huge with less number of fans and light but it won't affect much as we have classes during the early morning hours. I hope the government pays attention to this and does something to improve the infrastructure of the colleges. Though the canteen of the college is really small but it offers the best food at really cheap rates, I miss eating in the canteen...

The college is situated in Gol Park, Gariahat making it in the best place it could be. However, the college is 10-15 mins away from the main Gariahat area. The experiences of students regarding campus life of the college vary too much. If you were from a private school, you're going to hate yourself for choosing this college and you'll love it if you were in a government school. The ninety percent crowd of the college are from Bengali medium - government schools but if you find yourself some good friends during the three years journey, no one can stop you from enjoying it. With a lot of five star restaurants, malls and clubs, it gives its students an opportunity to enjoy which the campus couldn't. The fests of the college are nothing great but average.
