Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies or SIMS is one of the frontline management institutes in India that was established in 1993. An integral body of the illustrious Symbiosis International University, SIMS is a management institution that is in a class of its own in two distinct ways. It is the only management institute in India functioning on a public-private partnership or PPP basis.
The Defence Ministry under the government of India and Symbiosis International University came together to forge a partnership for administering and superintending the day to day activities from 2002. Hence, the majority of the seats for the programs offered by the establishment are reserved for children, wards, and dependants of defence personnel. SIMS is one of the few select management establishments in India that offers only postgraduate programs.
The campus located in the hub of Pune has been designed with meticulous care for accommodating more than 600 students and is equipped with advanced facilities. There are only 3 management schools in the whole of Western India that have been awarded the ISO 9001:2015 certification and SIMS is one of them. The Department of Science & Technology (under the purview of the central government) recognizes SIMS as a ‘Centre for Entrepreneurship.’
All the courses of SIMS are approved by University of Pune, AICTE, and UGC. The institute has an excellent placement track record, having assisted students in cornering plum positions in blue-chip companies like Deloitte, Infosys, ICICI, and HDFC, Ford Motors, Tata Motors, and many more.
Admissions in SIMS
The institution offers fulltime and executive postgraduate management programs. The full time, residential programs include ‘MBA,’ ‘PGADM’ (postgraduate advanced diploma in management), and ‘PGADM’ course in ‘real estate & construction management.’ The executive PG courses comprise ‘MBA executive,’ ‘diploma programs,’ and MDP ’and ‘data science.
To qualify for any of the aforementioned programs, the applicant must be a graduate of any recognized Indian university. At the same time, he must have secured at least 50% marks in the final examination on an aggregate basis. Once the candidate has fulfilled the above academic qualification conditions, he will have to be eligible for the specific eligibility criterions for the course he is applying to. For instance, to qualify for the PGADM course, the candidate should have nothing less than 4 years of work or professional experience. Alternatively, the MBA (executive) program calls for the applicant to have at least 3 years of professional experience.

History of SIMS
Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies was incepted in 1993 by Symbiosis International University. It is one of the few institutes in the country that is being operated on a PPP basis. More than 80% of the vacancies in all the postgraduate programs offered by the institute are set aside for dependents and children of defence personnel.
The institution’s vision is to “promote international understanding through quality education” while its chief mission is to instil the feeling that the “world is one family” in its students. The president and founder of Symbiosis and all its allied bodies is Dr. S.B. Majumdar, a celebrated academician, and philanthropist.
Campus and Infrastructure
A casual visitor is simply left awestruck after he or she steps inside the campus of SIMS based in the heart of the city of Pune. There are separate hostelries-two each for boys and girls. Every room has enough space to be shared by at least three students.
The hostels have the latest amenities and facilities including but not limited to internet connectivity, Wi-Fi, canteens, coffee shop, and so on. The meals served are very nutritious and more than sufficient to keep the students healthy and active. Non-vegetarian meals are provided two times a week, and the weekly menu is mailed to all the students well in advance.
There are two computer labs in the campus, and the entire campus area is a Wi-Fi zone. The library stocks nearly 20,410 books on management and has tie-ups with British Library, NHRD, TJ, ABCI, IABC, and AIMS amongst others. Students residing at the campus and the institute’s staff undergo thorough health check-up once in a year.
There are separate courts for playing badminton, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, fuse ball, and croquet. There are also grounds for playing football and cricket. The auditorium that houses 585 individuals is fully furnished and air-conditioned. SIMS also has a state of the art gymnasium and swimming pools.
Best Courses Offered at SIMS

This top-notch institute for management studies offers 7 PG courses-3 fulltime courses and 4 executive programs. The institute’s full-time programs include MBA, PGADM (previously PGPM), PGADM (Real Estate & Construction Management).
The executive curriculums comprise MBA (executive) and PG diploma programs with specializations in business management, financial management, human resources management, project management, business analytics, and supply chain management. The other two executive programs include the ‘management development program’ (MDP) and ‘Data Science for Business Users.’ Some of the most popular programs at SIMS are:-
MBA (full time/residential) – Students interested in registering for the full-time MBA program (2 years) must secure at least 50% marks in graduation from any recognized college or university. Those who are scheduled to appear for their final year examination are eligible as well, but they’ll have to obtain 50% marks in aggregate following the publication of results. 90% of seats are reserved for wards, children or dependents of defense personnel.
PGADM (full time/residential) – SIMS started the PGADM course in 2009. It is a 1-year course divided into 2 semesters. The program has been specially designed for middle and junior level executives who require a management certification for taking their career to the next level. The candidate in order to qualify for this program will need to have at least 4 years of professional experience in any industry.
Additionally, the applicant needs to have a graduation degree from any approved or recognized university having achieved nothing less than 50% marks. Since the entire syllabus is completed in just one year, this program is sometimes referred to as ‘fast-track MBA.’
Executive MBA – MBA (Executive) program is a 2-1/2 year course spread across 5 semesters. The classes for this study program are held on weekdays in the evenings for one set of batches and on weekends for another set. An applicant for this program must have secured at least 50% marks in his or her graduation from an approved university. Additionally, the candidate should have 3 years (complete) of work experience in his or her profession.
Postgraduate Diploma Programs-SIMS also offers an array of postgraduate diploma programs including PGDBM, PGDHRM, PGDBA, PGDPM, and PGDSCM. All these postgraduate programs have a 1-year timeline, and the entire curriculum is completed in two semesters, each of six months. A candidate who wants to study the course must possess a bachelor’s degree from any accredited university with at least 50% marks.
