New LJ College of Commerce B.Com Review By Mayank Maheshwari

New LJ College of Commerce started in 2013 and rather than going here and there, I decided to join this college as LJ is one of the best institutes in Ahmedabad. The college is located in the main LJ campus and the number of students in the campus is over 10k for sure. The other courses offered in the institute are affiliated to the deemed university while the college commerce is affiliated to the Gujarat University. The campus is huge and meeting students from various faculties was a great experience. The commerce college which begun the year I joined as the college only had courses related to science faculty. The commerce college therefore can’t be compared with their likes of technical institutes. The commerce college of LJ is not that great but still good enough and it's only a matter of time before it surpasses the top institutes like HL College of Commerce and Shree KK Parekh and others.

The college is very strict, and one can’t get away with lesser attendance. The threshold is kept at 75 but 50-60 is fine. The college building is old as the new buildings are all allocated to their diploma and engineering colleges. Never mind the classrooms were huge and so were the facilities. The college has some competent faculties that made sure they produce toppers at the University level. It didn’t happen during our time, but we weren’t far away either.

The faculty is great and the one that possess the best knowledge of the subjects. Some smart student tried to outplay them and what happened then can’t be described. The faculty members did all within their reach to educate us in a manner where we realize the importance of studies and don’t stop until we find a path to our careers. The faculty members were actually trying to promote the institutes MBA college and will have to admit that they succeeded as well as out of 240 students some 40-50 actually joined their MBA program.

The management and the faculty told us that in terms of placement, B.Com students don’t provide any value and therefore they should apply for higher studies. The college didn’t even bother to transfer some of the companies that came for hiring engineering students to us. Well, jokes apart getting a job today with simple graduation is next to impossible today.

There are 5 boys and 5 girls’ hostels. One must thank college for showing gender equality. The boys hostel should have more buildings and even if they cut out 1 building from the girls hostel it will help. Sorry for being biased but the college is known for management then why such a mismanagement in terms of hostel. In hostel there are options just like you have in hotels. You have AC and non-rooms and then on the basis of occupancy. The hostels are common for all the institutes that are at the main campus. I have been to hostel just once and can say that the hostels are good as if I compare to the one, I stayed in, this one is nowhere near. The hostel also has a mess facility but have no idea how it is but with the status that the college holds and then the number of outsiders that come to this college that has to be good. The college is located near the SG highway and there are various new apartments being built. If one is not comfortable with the hostel, they have the option of finding a flat nearby as I am sure they will cost equivalent or lesser than what the hostel charges.

The campus is huge and accommodates various colleges in the main campus. Some colleges' campus has been shifted from the campus in an individual campus. In terms of facilities the college provides air-conditioned classrooms. The college has numerous labs but as a commerce student we only had entry to the computer lab that was located in our building. The college has a library house that is mammoth. The institution has a nice playground where sports is been played on regular basis. Ahmedabad has produced various sports persons and that is why the University too pays heeds to sports seriously. In addition to outdoor, the college also has indoor sporting facility as well. One regret is for these many students there are just 2 canteens. The college can easily have 5-6 canteens to avoid unnecessary rounding around the canteen. The college certainly has the best infrastructure than any other colleges in Ahmedabad.

The commerce batch is the one that has all the times in the world and therefore from the first year itself we were asked to be a part of extra-curricular activities. I joined the chess club as I played chess at the junior level. I was made the captain of University’s chess team and slowly the commerce students overtook the engineering students in all the sports. However, our competition was with the other colleges and there also we made sure that our institution flag sail high and for our efforts we were highly praised. The campus life was fun-filled and was nice way to end our teenage prodigy.
