Carmel College for Women B.A Review By Susparsha Gaikwad

Carmel College is the first and only college for women in Goa. It is situated at the foothills in the village of Nuvem. Carmel College has one of the most beautiful, clean, and serene campuses. The college has secured an A+ rating from NAAC. It is well equipped with all the modern amenities like spacious and modern infrastructure, a well-functioning gym, a huge open ground for sports activities. The college also has a huge library which provides a vast range of reference books for students and also is full of rich literature books. The faculties in college are highly qualified and skilled to do their jobs well. The admission process of the college is very smooth. It is not much of a hassle. The college management closely looks after the functioning of the college. Carmel College also has a well-maintained hostel.

I pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Carmel College. There is no entrance test that one has to pass through before getting admission there. The criteria for eligibility are only that one needs to pass the HSSC examination with the required cut-off percentage. I decided to study Political Science at Carmel College is because I knew that it is one of the best colleges in Goa to study in. And I am so glad that I made that decision. I would never regret it. And to talk about the subject, I was always interested in Political Science and Current Affairs. The syllabus and the structure of the course were such that they kept me hooked on to it. The faculties played a great role in inculcating critical thinking and imparting knowledge among us in many creative ways.

In the Political Science Department, there were a total of 5-6 faculties. Overall, the college has more than 35 faculties for all the different streams and the various departments. All the faculty members are highly qualified, and skilled in their job. Most of the teachers come with extensive experience in the field of teaching. There are a few who are relatively new and young in the field. Almost 90% of the teachers have cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) that serves as a prerequisite for a professor’s job. All of them have completed their Masters in the respective subjects or they hold a Ph.D. in their subjects. The faculties are highly knowledgeable and never fall short of guiding the students in their course and also in their final year dissertations.

There exists a placement cell in the college. But it is not much active. I have neither heard nor much experienced some companies coming to the college for placements. Though the college strives to get students placed in missionary schools as teachers. Students do have an opportunity to interact with a few guest speakers who are invited to college often. These are people who have done some exceptional work towards humanity or towards generating awareness in society. Some students do get absorbed in their organizations either as interns or as employees after their graduation.

Carmel College has a well-functioning and well-maintained hostel. Goa, being a smaller state most of the students prefer traveling to college rather than staying in the hostel. There were a few girls who stayed in the hostel when I was a student of Carmel. The hostel building is a relatively old building with minimal amenities. The food provided in the hostel is of good quality. They serve vegetarian as well as non-vegetarian food in the hostel mess. It has 24*7 security. Plus, there are surveillance cameras installed on the campus. The college takes all safety measures to ensure the safety and security of its students.

Carmel College has a relatively large campus with lush green trees all around. And mountains at the backdrop of it. The college is equipped with modern and spacious buildings. The infrastructure of the college is designed keeping in mind the comfort and ease of students. The classrooms are huge and comfortable with all the required amenities. The college has separate and specifically dedicated laboratories for chemistry, zoology, physics, and psychology. It also has a computer lab. All students have free access to it. Students prefer to work on their projects in the computer lab for the high-speed internet that the college provides. Carmel College has the largest libraries among all the colleges in Goa. The library is full of various variety of reference books for students, also has a rich collection of literature. There is ample space to sit in solitude and work in silence. There is a departmental store on the campus that caters to student’s mid-lecture snacking cravings. College also has a canteen that provides delicious treats to tingle your taste buds.

Overall, Carmel College gives one a great college life. The campus is such that it makes one fall in love with the college. As soon as December strikes begin the series of events held in college. Student clubs and student councils hold various events from December to March. It is a fun time of the year. There are various clubs in the college that conduct their individual events as well.
