Victoria Institution (College) B.A Review By Anuska Kundu

Being a current student of this college, I am aware of its every aspect. This college is under Calcutta University and is accredited as B+ grade by NAAC. On the first day when I entered this college, the seniors and other staffs were being seen in front of the gate for taking the freshers to the auditorium. I can never explain how wonderful the auditorium is! The spacious auditorium has a beautiful name also, i.e. “Keshub Memorial Hall” where all the programmes and seminars are held often. Our seniors always encourage us to join the NCC and NSS group for our betterment and I can proudly say that I am a part of the NSS group of our college. It makes me more concentrated on my studies. Here the members of the Students’ Union always keep trying to arrange some activities for us. I have also seen that the professors always use advanced technologies for teaching us. Our Principal arranges Parent-Teacher-Student meetings every year to avoid any kind of student-related problem. Everything in this college is fine except the campus area.

I have to appreciate it a lot when the academic part comes. I am a student of English Literature so I have enough observation in the theoretical parts. This college owns an A.C Hall named Suniti Sabhaghar where we often go for attending lectures by the external professors. That hall is my all-time favorite because that is full of wall paintings. I am certain that none in the college will find literature boring because the professors always use screen presentation so that the students want to learn every detail with more interest. For the practical subjects, I don't have that much clarity but as far as I have seen, this college has arranged a good atmosphere for the practical subjects also.

Well, this college consists of more or less well-experienced faculty members. There are two sections: Morning and Day; Each faculty includes more than five professors for every subject. So it is impossible for me to know about all the college professors, I can only tell about them with whom I have confronted till now. This college has a wide fame specially for its English and Psychology department and I also followed that somehow the Arts Faculty is better than the Science and Commerce. Especially the Science professors should take the students more prominently. Their teaching process is appreciative but they are not student-friendly so I think that the Principal must take care of this unfair fact.

Currently, This college is not providing any placement offer. I have heard from my seniors that this college has put an end to this facility a few years ago for some reason. I don't know the reason and I also don't have any idea if this college will restart to provide any placement offer in the future or not.

I have some friends who have opted for the college hostel because their hometowns are quite far. I visited there for a few times with them and found it average as per its daily meals. The hostel charge is too high according to its food quality. The meals are not that much tasty whereas the rooms are comparably better. The hostel staffs clean all the rooms every single day.

This college has two beautiful museums for the Zoology and History departments where I get to see interesting and antique things every day. Different Laboratories are there for Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Psychology, Journalism, Geography, and Commerce. Our college also provides a Students’ Common Room where we can play indoor games and can read magazines also. Ohh how can I forget about the canteens! This college has two canteens: one is for light foods and another one is for spicy foods. I have tasted most of the items from there and all the items are very delicious and I don't have any doubt in the hygiene also. The most amazing fact of this college is it has two central library with a collection of more than 35,000 books. Sometimes I make photocopies of the books from the libraries because the price is cheap and it also provides an Internet facility for the students. The campus ground is full of greenery but the area is a bit small, so I have enough allegations against it.

Science students are so lucky in the fact that this college arranges excursions for them every year whereas the Arts students like me don't get that opportunity to go for an educational tour with the whole department. But I enjoyed the Fresher’s Welcome Party from the bottom of my heart and the Union also arranges other programs like Annual Fest, Prize Distribution Ceremony, Basanta Utsav with renowned singers and other famous personalities. This is a Brahma college so I never got the chance to enjoy Saraswati Puja in college. Anyway, I will cherish these days forever. I must say, my college life is far better than my school life.
