Srinivas College of Pharmacy Valachil B.Pharm Review By Inderjit Jaikumar

I attended Srinivas College of Pharmacy Valachil Mangalore for my undergraduate. The college is affiliated to RGUHS, Bangalore. If you are driving here, you can ask for the Valachil campus. For admission here, you’ll need to get a DD for the admission fee and fill out the application. The principal of the college is Dr. Ramakrishna, and he is a helpful person.

To be eligible to study B. Pharm in this college, you need to have passed PU or the equivalent of it with 40% or more marks. I can say that I was satisfied with my classes here. All the necessary things were available and provided for labs, and we gained practical experience in areas like pharmacology and pharmacognosy. I think the classes here can prepare you for a job, but you have to take the interest for that. The course is tough and I remember that I had to pull my socks up to get good credits at the University level.

The faculty including the teaching staff and management are good. There are about 30 teaching faculty, and all of them have their M.Pharm, Pharm D. or Ph.D. The majority of them have their M. Pharm. I would say about 60% of the teachers are young, and have a teaching experience of about 3-4 years. The more experienced teachers have a teaching experience of about 15-20 years. From my first year itself, I have had good teachers. This was essential, because that is when we build our base in pharmacy like with organic chemistry and pharmaceutics. Most of the teachers use a mix of power point presentations and assignments. They taught the subjects well.

The placements at this college after B.Pharm are average. I went on to study M.Pharm, but the companies that come for recruitment here include MedPlus, Apollo Hospitals, and IQIVIA. The average package is about Rs. 2.5 lakhs per annum. The highest package in my year of graduation was Rs. 3.6 lakhs per annum. There is a placement cell, who organizes the placement interviews, however there is no training or anything. We just attend, and we can prepare on our own. About 60-70% of students who were desiring placement got placed in my year. In comparison to other colleges of Mangalore, Srinivas College of Pharmacy has the highest placement ratio.

The college has one boys and one girl’s hostel. The fees are very reasonable at about Rs. 4000 per month. They have about 100 rooms each, and most of the rooms are 3 person occupancy or 4 person occupancy. Coming to the food, it is mainly south Indian food. In the hostel, there is a mess and common rooms where you can play indoor board games, etc. There is also outside space where you can play badminton or just sit with friends. There is no Wi-Fi in the hostel, so you will have to get your own source if you want. Many people move out to nearby PGs also, and there are several available in walk able distance from the campus itself. The hostel is good but has restrictions like for boy’s hostel the curfew time is 9.30 pm.

The college is located on the Valachil campus. It is located near the IT college, and there are many facilities. You can find all types of sports fields like football, volleyball, and basketball. Students also participate in sports like kabbadi and running. Apart from this, the college has a library, all types of laboratories like for pharmaceutics, microbiology, cognosy, etc. I would suggest you to make use of the labs and facilities, and really get to know the instruments. During theory classes we just learn about the working of the machines and see a picture. However, in labs, if you ask the teacher or even the lab attendant, they can show you how the machine actually runs. This will be really important for you if you want to get into the industry or even research side. Canteen was one of the nicest place as that kept buzzing all the while.

I would say that I am happy with joining in this college. We have an annual pharmacy week, and this is literally awaited so badly by the students. We have different events, themes, and competitions on this week. Aside from this, there are celebrations for Onam and Diwali too. There are different clubs to be a part of here too like drama club, dance club, singing club, and so on. Aside from this, there are sports too. Many students from the college have participated even at the state level for sports like cross-country running and kabbadi, and have bagged prizes. The seniors were helpful and before exams a chit-chat with them really helped me. I don’t think I can thank Srinivas college of Pharmacy enough in this lifetime as I had a memorable time at the University.
