Central Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and Technology B.Tech Review By Vishal Salat

Being a son of army men my father was disciplined and taught us discipline right from the word goes. Cleanliness and use of natural resources to their fullest enticed me from an early age. CIPET is one such institute that has many branches and I did my B. Tech in Plastic Technology from their institute in Ahmedabad. After HSC the admission was based on state counseling and the Guj CET score played a pivotal role in that. The cut-off was quite high but the institute has an army quota and because of that, I got the admission without much of a fuss. This I can say that my admission at CIPET College was based on luck factor but once you enter the institute all are treated equally and there’s no quota or anything that will help you touch the fray. Many seats were getting lapsed as students don’t see their future in such courses and somewhere they are right. The campus is hot and happening but only 5% female students. In the end what matters is placement and my ambitions of a great placement went to rest as the pay structure in the plastic industry is not so high and had to continue studies even after my graduation.

Testing and designing was the way of studies. I couldn’t understand at first that if the drawing can lead to a degree why the hell we have such heavy books then. The college is affiliated with Gujarat Technical University and I don’t know what kind, of course, they have designed. At times all of it felt useless and talking to my seniors I could see the frustration on their faces. Mold design is what the main subject was and the demand for which is in the Middle East and many students from my batch are doing a low pay scale job over there.

They were thrilled to have us on board but it wasn’t vice-versa. Old lagoons with huge rich experience and were quite helpful. However, they couldn’t help me as I was not so good at drawing and contributing any towards their inputs. Still, they kept backing me and I just delivered by getting passing marks. I have written about my personal problems and thus if you are interested in this course you can take admission here as the faculty are great and they never give up. This was one of the biggest positives that I took from CIPET’s faculty.

Reliance was one of the biggest contenders and then many plastic related industries took us for training time and again. All of which went way over my head and again the people during our training were so patient that they even wrote a letter to the college to extend my internship. I missed the cut for the final placements and no regret with that as I knew engineering and that too plastic engineering can’t be my cup of tea. The students who got the job after toiling so very hard was around 4-5 lakhs per annum. I could see the frustration in most of the students with the kind of opportunities they got.

CIPET has one of the best hostels. There were 3 hostels and all inside the campus. 2 for boys and 1 for girls. The rooms were furnished and we were given coolers during the summers. The campus location is such that dew is always around at night and roaming in the open air was kind of a brain relaxer. The hostel life at CIPET was good and was the second positive of my life at CIPET. In most of the hostels in Gujarat, only veg food is served and the CIPET hostel was no different. The food was delicious and had many vegetarian delicacies served.

The classes had projectors, LEDs, and White Boards to make the teaching innovative. The students also had to carry their laptops in the classes as most of the notes were sent to us online. All the departments had their own labs and plastic engineering labs were more unique than any damn thing on this earth. Plastic material testing and plastic characterization were done in those labs. Those labs helped me learn the kind of plastics that are available and their uses. If this you think was unique then there was another unique room called tool lab and that had high-speed lathe machine, polishing kit, air compressor, and fitting vices, etc. CIPET has video conferencing rooms to connect with their institutes of CIPET. Mutual conferences invited lectures, and faculty meet was done through video conferencing in this room. There was just a single canteen that catered to all our needs like tea, coffee, snacks, and some fast food items. The infrastructure was up to date and still can’t get over those innovative labs.

The life at Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology for me was more like a moron. I chose this subject without giving it a thought and made friends with students alike who faced the same issues. We all discussed what next and we came up with few ideas and implemented one of those. The institute was a boiler but not for me as I couldn’t take much that students in general can. Right then no harsh feeling for the institute, I just battled my issues as the course was beyond me.
