I being a pass out from Ahmedabad Institute of Technology for my engineering would rate this college much higher than many of the higher-ranked engineering colleges in Ahmedabad. It is one of those engineering colleges that have always encouraged students to experiment. As a student, we could never hold back because the college management will start chasing us if we don’t contribute. Studying in AIT means you have to be far more superior than studies because your creativity, skill set, and other talents will also be tested. The college has never mixed studies with other activities as studies are the top most precedence of the college. A good score in GCET is required to get a berth here and for people claiming that AIT Ahmedabad gives away admissions just like that is a laughing statement. The technology would surprise one and many as Python and hacking were taken far more seriously than many programming languages. CS is about innovation and updation. The college professors played a vital role here because they can easily become tech gurus for any organization because their knowledge of the subject is another level. College can be termed average by many but from my experience, I had a great learning experience as nothing was forced upon at AIT.
GTU has over 100 engineering institutes under its belt and every college needs toppers from their college at the university level. AIT was no different but it kept such students in reserves because the bookworms were sidelined from other activities and such students missed on the fun that AIT provides. Learning was indeed fun because the lab sessions were inspiring and one has access to computer labs as and when they wanted. The seniors were asked to help out the juniors and they never shied away from the task in hand as they always considered it as their catch-up task. Academics on the whole was quite good at AIT.
Their guidance and knowledge was questionable because you ask them any question on the latest happenings in the world of technology and they will answer that. It almost felt like they are still studying and want to teach us a lot more than what our syllabus has. The world is changing every day and keeping the students updated is like their religion. Well, one can only thank them for the kind of dedication they showed in their job.
The college doesn’t boast a great industrial relationship as Wipro has its tie-up with the institute for a long time. The problem again is that for the similar roles the students of other colleges like L.D. College of Engineering and Nirma University are paid higher by Wipro than AIT and that really disappointed many of us. Wipro also sponsored further education of the students they saw potential in. The placements had 60% covered and the remaining 40 like me were not even given the explanation or due efforts from the college to get us placed. Hard luck is what we were told but luckily the placements were completed before the start of last semester and thereby we had time to make a rethink of what to do next.
The college doesn’t have a hostel facility. The college is located at a remote location and having a hostel means having enough security on board. Kids of nearby villages are often seen trespassing inside the institute and the college has taken a wise decision of not having an in-house hostel. The college has transport facilities and students are dropped to their destinations by the college itself. Independent living facilities are of top quality in Ahmedabad and all the students from other cities had made their arrangements privately.
The campus is neither small nor big but the location was a little unfavorable. Girls can feel unsafe and therefore they were never allowed to leave the campus alone. Gujarat, on the whole, is quite safe but still, there were no street lights outside the college and that made it tough while staying back in the college after evening. The college labs are spacious and are technically advanced. The college has a canteen was quite small because the college strength is high it was mostly over-occupied. The college ground was multipurpose as it was not just used for playing sports but was also used for common college meetings, students meet, and annual functions. The infrastructure was not fancy but has everything that a normal college should have inside the campus.
Engineering life is different from other streams. The events, project work, and industrial visits are regular and Ahmedabad is an industrial city so we got a little exposure. Ahmedabad is not an IT city and therefore our field exposure was less in comparison to other departments but still good enough to understand the industry know-how. Engineering colleges and fests go hand in hand. Every semester there was a technical fest and was reviewed by industry experts. Those fests helped us improve and also develop on a personal and academic level. The annual fest was a 3-day affair and every Navratri we also used to have Garba nights. The college took all the responsibility in bringing and sending the students safely back to their homes. AIT campus redefines students and makes them champ as many students from our college are settled in western countries.
