My college life in SGMC, Thiruvananthpuram

Overall Rating
Sree Gokulam Medical College and Research Foundation is a private college with good number of patients and infrastructure. MBBS was my biggest goal since childhood and I was allotted this college based on my NEET score. We can learn a lot here by observing our senior doctors and gain hands on experience to improve clinical skills. In short, SGMC has played a big role in making me a great doctor.
 

Academics Rating
Total duration of the course is 5.5 years (4.5 years of class + 1 year of compulsory internship). Admission is based on the rank secured in NEET-UG. Usually, the cut off state rank for merit quota is 2500-3000 (General Category). Applicants who score 50th percentile in NEET are eligible for admission (cut off vary for SC/ST category). Tuition fee is a bit high (₹760000) but scholarships are available for backward classes. Tuition fee of NRI quota is ₹2000000.
 

Faculty Rating
Faculties are really good and experienced. There are total 19 subjects. Theory classes are usually taken through projectors and smart classes. Practical sessions are held in respective labs. Sessional exams are conducted in between each semester. University exams are conducted yearly, first year and final year exams are the most difficult. Mentorship programs are also there each year to assess and improve the mental health of the students.
 

Placement Rating
1 year of internship is necessary for course completion. The stipend is very low as compared to other colleges. Current stipend is ₹7000/month. But it is a great opportunity to work in different departments, gain medical knowledge and improve our clinical skills which helps a lot in acquiring jobs in other hospitals.
 

Hostel Rating
Hostel facility is available for all students. Separate boy’s and girl’s hostel are there in the campus. In girl’s hostel, A and B blocks with 5 floors have larger rooms than C and D block. C block has 10 floors. Lift facilities are available in all the hostels. A swimming pool is also near the hostel. Gym is also provided with different timings for boys and girls. AC will also be provided if needed. Food served is of average quality. Hostel fee is ₹125000/year. If u don't prefer a hostel, rooms and apartments are available near the campus where rent varies from ₹7500 – 13000 per month.
 

Infrastructure Rating
Overall infrastructure is good. This college is situated over a vast area of about 50 acres land. It has 700 bed hospitals with 15 operation theatres, diagnostic labs, and pharmacy and radio diagnostic department. OPD timing is usually 9am - 4pm. 24 hour casualty and ICU facility is also there. It also separate academic blocks.
 

Campus Rating
Campus life is so enjoyable. Each batch contains 150 students, large enough to make memories with. You have a lot of space to spend time with your friends like G-café, Galapagos, shack, library, etc. We have a College union (Navodhan) for conducting fests and events. There are different clubs for music, sports and literature. Inter-batch sports and arts competitions are held every year, most memorable being the college day and graduation ceremony. These programs last for weeks with concerts and DJ. Charitable groups are also there for helping poor.
