Midnapore Medical College & Hospital MBBS Review By Bikranta Majumdar

Located in the heart of Midnapore, at a distance of about 2 kilometers from the railway station, the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital was established in the year 2004. It is affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS). It offers various courses at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and Diploma levels. MBBS, Nursing, PG, DMLT, BPT, etc. are some of the courses offered by the college. The campus is spread across an area of 25 acres and is segregated into a college and a hospital. The UG Hostels for MBBS and Nursing are located inside the hospital campus only. The campus does not have a playground of its own. Overall, the college provides an above average and a decent experience.

Considering MBBS, it is a five and a half years course including a year of mandatory internship in the hospital. The admission takes place through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) held every year. There are 200 seats for MBBS at this college. Out of these 200 seats, 15% seats are filled by the All-India Quota and the rest by State Quota. To take admission, one has to appear for the NEET and clear the cutoff after which they can apply for the counseling process. The academic standards of this college are great as compared to that in other medical colleges. The course is vast, and the syllabus is huge; and you will have to study most of the things on your own.

My opinion on the faculty experience is mixed. Some might teach you with the most fascinating techniques while some won’t. Most of the faculties take classes in Bangla language. This proves to be a major drawback for the students who do not speak or understand the language, mainly the students coming from other states. This makes them feel disconnected and left out most of the times. Overall, the faculties are knowledgeable as they have years of academic and teaching experience and it's up to you how much you can learn from them.

We do not have a dedicated placement cell at our college. After completing one year of mandatory internship, you can apply for a house staffship at the hospital which is for a maximum tenure of 1 year. Post MBBS, you can go for your post-graduation, work at a hospital, or practice in your private clinic.

Both Boys' and Girls' hostels are present in the campus. The hostels may feel a little overcrowded as 2 to 3 students share a room. The Boys' hostel has two canteens which serve decent food. The rooms are in moderate condition as the hostel has not been renovated since its establishment. Cleanliness is average with the bathrooms and toilets in not so good condition. A small playground is present inside the hostel premises. Security at hostels can be improved.

Being a Government hospital, it includes the entire essential infrastructure, including various departments and advanced facilities like the Cath Lab, etc. The college has dedicated departments for all the specialties. The academic building has 3 Lecture Theatres, which are air-conditioned and equipped with projectors and sound system. A Wi-Fi equipped Library is present as well.

The campus life is decent but can feel boring as you follow a fixed routine every day. There are various programs held on different occasions. The annual college fest - Impulse, is a prime time of joy. Different clubs like photography, singing, dancing is present, though not officially. Overall, it's a good college where you will learn new things and spend a decent college life as well.
