Sri Aurobindo College Morning B.Com Review By Anshul Soam

When people talk about DU, they talk about the Hindu College, St. Stephen's College, Ramjas College, SRCC, or Hansraj. Sri Aurobindo is lesser in reputation but no less than them in academics or the drama that happens in DU. To me, the first thing is the course and then the college. I had to do B. Com (Hons) from DU, and irrespective of the college that I got, I was happy that I was a regular student of DU at one of its best colleges. I will share a few things that I observed there that will help you decide whether or not you should choose this college. In the colleges that I have mentioned above, they started societies and clubs way back, but Sri Aurobindo did that in 2013. A year before I joined and therefore, they weren’t as active as other colleges' societies. The times have changed now as my sister is in the same college, and she has a lot of good things to share about the societies that are operating now. Likewise, many new things have unfolded at the college, and therefore one should consider Sri Aurobindo college seriously.

In most of the DU colleges, it is a mandate that students should have 75% attendance. Not even the top colleges have made it compulsory so forget about our college. It was at one’s will whether they wanted to attend the classes or were happy taking tuitions in the evening and preparing on their own. During internals and pre-university exams, one has to be present as those who miss that don’t get their admit card to sit for university exams. So just take care of these two aspects, and if you believe you can study on your own, it is not necessary to even come to college daily.

The faculty were the best people. Other than being knowledgeable, they were also quite easy on students. Many of us initially avoided reaching them, but one should never do that. One thing that stands out about our faculty is that they walk the talk. Almost all of them have had a very successful career in teaching, and they are a part of DU for a reason. They had a lot of lessons that they gave us after we reached out to them. I missed a lot to capture from them, but don’t repeat the mistake I did if you are in this college.

DU has been going harsh on colleges to give their students placements from the campus, but the industries don’t find a simple B.Com student to match their requirements. Many PSU companies like IGL, BHEL, NTPC, and BEL were invited, and they did offer some jobs. However, most of those jobs were conditional, and if I give a clear picture, only 10% of students had placements from the campus.

Sri Aurobindo College doesn’t have a hostel facility. In my batch, I could count the number of outsiders on my fingers. Therefore, I would say the college has done the right thing by not investing in something that is not scalable yet. Once the students from other states get to know about Sri Aurobindo Morning College, they can have a hostel facility. As of now, students can stay at the DU hostel as just one recommendation letter from the college is enough to get a room there. For those who are not interested in hostels, there are various flats and other rental properties in Delhi which are easily available close to the college.

The college is not as big as St. Stephens or other DU colleges, but the college was running in two shifts even in such a compact campus. Since there’s just one block at the campus, it had everything in it. Our lecture hall, library hall, a small student zone, and also area for societies to have their meetings. The college has a playground which has volleyball net, a cricket pitch at the center and was even converted into a ceremony hall on occasions. The best thing about the infrastructure was its location. South Delhi is one of the best hangout zones in Delhi, and places like Hauz Khas Village or the Select City Walk are where we used to have a jam. That’s it about the infrastructure as there’s not much at the college for which I can blow trumpets any longer.

The crowd of the college is great. Also, the crowd was diversified as there were some nutcrackers and definitely some smart people as well. If I divide it further, there were some really down-to-earth people while some flaunting people as well. On the whole, the campus life was full of flatterers, joke crackers, some bullying of juniors, and definitely a lot of winners.
