Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology B.Tech Review By Patil Niranjan

The institute is situated 20 KM away from the city of Thiruvanthapura in the beautiful mountain areas. The institute had a bond with ISRO till last year batch and students could directly get into ISRO but now an interview round has been introduced but ISRO dream still being in the limelight. The institute has a great infrastructure and well-developed labs. Students will have enough exposure to ISRO related activities. The major setback is lack of opportunities to socialize and the lack of sports facilities. Apart from mess food, you will have option to eat food in a small cafeteria and a small restaurant outside campus. The campus has really strict security norms as it is guarded by CISF guards.

IIST has rigorous academics having lectures as well as lab structures. There are two exams one is midterm and the one is end semester. The midterm exam carries 25-35 marks variable, according to the faculty whereas the end semester exam will be of 40 marks. The rest marks out off 100 will be calculated based on the internal assessments. Practical based study approach is appreciated. In first semester there are common subjects like Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Communication Skills, C++, etc.

The faculties here are well qualified and all of them are really good at their respective subjects. The faculty to student ratio is nearly 1:12. This helps in smooth functioning and better understanding for the faculties and students as well. The teaching assistant faculty is a boon here as they always help you out through many of the issues regarding you faculties and studies.

The institute has a newly opened placement cell. It provides training for students to suit the various global standard placements norms and try to bring more private as well as public sector companies.

The institute is completely residential for undergraduate students and hence has a really good and affordable hostel along with mess facility.

IIST has a great infrastructure inspired from solar system and aircraft structures. There are 4 major blocks in the institute i.e. Aerospace, Avionics, Science and Interdisciplinary blocks. There is a really big library, probably the biggest in Southern India. There is a small cafeteria inside the campus along with a small tea point. There are student’s activity center, amphitheatre, Multipurpose hall, gym, football turf, cricket nets, etc for student’s facilitation.

There are two major fests ‘Conscientia’, the tech fest and ‘Dhanak’, the cultural fest which are one of its kinds with a footfall of 2000+. there are various club like Dance Club, Music Club, Astronomy Club, Rocketry Club, Aero Club, Robotics Club, etc. which keeps one busy all the times. Apart from this one can freely participate in any of sprits activities he wants.
