Army Institute of Law Mohali : Placement Success with Faculty Support

Army Institute of Law was established in July 1999 by the Army under the aegis of the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES). The institute has a good reputation amid the top law institutes of the country and a strong alumni base. The institute aims at overall development in a disciplined environment. The institute is affiliated to the Punjabi University, Patiala, accredited by NAAC, and approved by BCI. The eureka moment for me choosing this institute for my further education was the brilliant balance it offers with extensive curriculum, moot courts, debates, and sports fests. The campus area is quite compact but it provides for the entire basic and necessary infrastructure inclusive of music room, amphitheater, multi-purpose hall, GYM, and cafeteria.

With 'Aspire and Achieve' as its motto, the institute strives for brilliance in academics and research pursuits. Currently the Institute offers BA LLB, a five year integrated course and LLM. The seat distribution for the institute is that there are 71 seats for wards of army personnel, 01 seat for ward of Indian Navy Personnel, 03 seats for wards of Indian Air Force Personnel and 05 seats for the candidates of All India General Category through an Online Law Entrance Test (LET) conducted by the institute at designated test centers. LET is online counseling of the students selected based on merit of the entrance exam. The test comprises of 4 sections: Mental Ability, General Knowledge and Current Affairs, Law Aptitude, and General English to be attempted in 2 hours. The remaining 20 seats are for the Punjab Resident Civil Category. Their admission is done on 10+2 merit basis and is also done through a centralized online counseling. The admission is this category requires the candidate's Punjab Domicile. The frequency of the exam is such that per semester the institute conducts mid semesters and internal assessment for each subject followed by the end semester exam which is conducted by the Punjabi University, Patiala. The institute follows a robust and inclusive curriculum with a highly qualified and approachable faculty.

The fee structure varies for the wards of army personnel and that of civil category. The institute one-time charges inclusive of refundable security, alumni, and Convocation are Rs. 46,910 and Rs. 52,160 respectively. The annual charges inclusive of tuition fee, admission fee building fee, learning resources fee, games and sports, university fee is Rs. 1, 36,826 for army personnel and Rs. 1, 68,035 for the civil category. The payment mode is online.

One of the most remarkable feature of the institute is that is stills functions the old school way in terms of disciplined and regular lectures with 75% mandatory attendance. However, it doesn’t forget to use modern teaching techniques, presentations, group discussions, and smart boards to deliver their lectures. The faculty is highly qualified with a laudable experience and expertise in the field of their respective subjects. The faculty members are highly approachable and help the students in the moot court competitions, research paper publications and as coordinators of various student run societies like the Debating Society, Moot Court Society, Society for Personal Laws, etc.

The institute has a placement cell headed by a placement officer. The cell helps the students in securing good placements at various law firms and corporate houses. Over the past years, many students or Aeolians as we say have left a benchmark at various top tire law firms and themselves have started them too. The cell regularly organizes resume building sessions and mock interview sessions to train the students for the real world. It also connects with some of the leading professionals in different legal fields to interact with the students through guest lectures. Renowned companies like HDFC, Wipro, and HSBC recruit from our institute.

The college has as an academic block, separate self studying hall called the Abhimanyu hall, a well equipped library, air conditioned classrooms, sport complex, indoor games, music room, gym, cafeteria, recreational gardens and open gym in the girl's hostel as well. Although the campus size is moderate it in the prime location of Mohali, Sector 68. The adjacent market provides for all daily needs from fruits and vegetables to tailor and dry cleaners. The locality is safe with hospitals and police station nearby. The college as a video conference room, computer lab, seminar hall, moot court room, multipurpose hall, research cell and all time nursing assistance available. The college as CCTVs installed in and outside the campus premises with an all time surveillance by male and female security guards. The annual hostel charges and mess charges are Rs. 1,16,882 and Rs. 1,32, 297 for army and civil wards respectively. Additional charges of Rs. 6,000 for single and Rs. 3,000 for double sharing AC rooms.

Overall, I would say that one could have a good environment for his or her holistic development and academic pursuits here. The limited strength of the institute helps one build better connections and worthy friends. The crowd is filtered with an amalgamation of students from different walks of life. The student quality is great and competitive since more than of comes from the army background and the Punjab category as well comes after the groundbreaking cut offs of 10+2 examinations, which is normal above 90 percent only. The institute has many centers and societies for gender justice, debate, moot, reporting, research, social sciences, personal laws, constitutional laws, ADR to name a few. I have been a member of two of these societies and trust me it teaches you a lot about meeting the deadlines, organizing events, and addressing student problems. The institute has its annual day and sports day with regular tournaments of basketball, cricket, volleyball, football etc. The institute sends contingents to country's renowned sports and cultural fests. AIL has always shown it's flying colors in them, specially one can never go wrong with the sports team. Apart from this, the institute also has a separate budget plan for sending students to Parliamentary Debates and National and International Moot Courts and guesses the best part? You can also avail condonation from lectures and reimbursement for travel for the same. My journey until now has been quite adventurous where I am exploring the world around and myself in a nurturing shell called the Army Institute of Law.
