Rizvi College of Arts Science and Commerce BJMC Review By Amanulla Mahabale

Rizvi College Bandra is a big name in Mumbai and not just students from Mumbai but across the country come and study here. I joined the college in junior year and was eligible for direct admissions to B. Com but for BMM just like others had to sit for the entrance as entrance have become mandatory for BMM course. Rizvi College has many branches and, in the Science, and Commerce college BMM course have a great reputation. We were sort of seen as celebrities because we were seen with cameras, mic in hands, and hosting most events of the college including Jashn-E-Rizvi. No foul language is allowed at the campus and students were seen talking just in English rather than Hindi or Marathi. Rizvi was always ahead of its peers and the location of the college has to do a lot with it as the college is close to Carter Road which is one of the top areas in suburbs.

BMM course requires a lot of learning because what is projected about Mass Media is different than what it is. Our course had subjects for fun but doing them practically was not so fun. We were hardly left with time for ourselves. The actively encouraging learning of the college has made many of us its biggest cheerleader. We had to invest a lot of our efforts, time, and money because our course demanded extra and therefore many of us even went for paid internships. We did everything possible to learn as much as we could on campus and off-campus where we were duly assisted by our professors. The lectures are not mandatory here as some students had attendance even lesser than 20% and still came and gave the university exams.

Special faculties were required since our course is special. So, some of the professors took time off from their jobs and came and gave the lectures. Some even called us to their work stations as they taught us there. The media studies aren’t as easy because a lot of skills are required with which not all are born. So, developing our skills was the task they took in there and proved their mettle by making us that skilled. So, faculties were spot on with their teaching and the skill set and mindset have aspired us to learn as much as we can from them.

Not many colleges that offers BMM have direct campus placements. However, we were provided the opportunities to work under some of the most influential names and media houses and advertisement agencies that finding job on the basis of the degree wasn’t that tough. However, this industry is the least paid industry and therefore after graduation all we could find ourselves is jobs worth 10-15k and that too there won’t be any timing for the jobs. One has to be specialized and adept with equipments and editing to be paid more and therefore had to look for options where I can learn all that.

The college doesn’t have a hostel and that’s fine considering that there’s a private boy’s hostel close to the campus. In Bandra east too there are few cheaper options for the ones who coming from different places. Having said that, staying in an apartment in Bandra can be a very costly affair because rent of 1BHK house in the area and that too in an old building is no less than 50-60k. So, for outsiders finding accommodation can be an issue but we Mumbaikars had no issues because just outside the college there was a bus stop and an auto from Khar Road Station costs not more than 50 rupees.

The college is as good as any other colleges of Mumbai where we see some old buildings and that too max one or two building as the same building had junior college classes in morning and senior college classes in evening. So, the same set of classes were used. There were around 10 labs at the institute and the ground floor had the large auditorium that had a seating space of around 400-500 people. The seminar hall was quite small and was used only during specific department guest lectures. Rizvi college’s parking area was small and therefore students were asked to park their vehicles at a private parking space that was close to the college. The college doesn’t have any sporting facilities but still have a gym and students could use that gym without paying any cost.

Well, the life at Rizvi College commands authority because BMM students were looked as students of some other planets. The campus had not much boundation and therefore one can live with peace at the campus. All Indian festivals including Diwali, EID, Ganesh Chaturthi, and Christmas were celebrated with same amount of zeal. Rizvi campus had people from diverse backgrounds but one has to dare to call somebody wrong as it was not tolerated at all.
