Faculty of Law at JMI Delhi: Affordable Fees for Legal Education

Overall, Jamia Millia Islamia University provides best learning experience for its students and infrastructure for better achievements in legal fraternity. It became my choice for several reasons. It is located in the capital of country that provides greater exposure and experience. It is also one of the cheapest universities in India (in terms of fee structure). This university is known to have strong alumni network, all around the world making, making it great choice for future prospect. You will find diversity in classroom among students from all over the country. It is also known to have best and experienced faculty ready. One thing that fascinate us all is that its NIRF ranking keeps on improving every year. Currently, its Faculty of Law is at 9th position among Law departments of the country, surpassing all other NLUs except few. This review is dedicated to highlight the facilities of Faculty of Law in JMI campus.

I chose BA LLB, which is an integrated 5-year Law program after passing Class 12, offered in different law schools or universities in our country. It offers this course in two batches, Self-finance, and regular. Regular and self-finance batches have capacity of 60 students respectively, which means total 120 students. There is no difference between these two except timing and fee structure. The timing of former is morning and later is evening. My motive of choosing this course was to complete Law course in 5 years from a reputed central university, having recognition all around the world. The person desired of doing this course from JMI New Delhi are required to clear its entrance exam conducted every year. Once, the entrance exam is cleared, the concerned student will be notified by university’s administration along with display of list of selected candidates. In my course, there are total 10 semesters in five years, which means 2 semesters every year or one semester in every 6 months. The academics of this course prepare students for real-life challenges they might face in legal fraternity and different competitive exams. For example, providing ample opportunities of legal internships to get to know the practical side of law, guidance by professors in case of doubts related to any career problem or their respective subjects, organizing counseling sessions and seminar with the presence of judges, and senior advocates, officers. The quality education is offered in regular classes.

Registration fee for entrance exams is Rs. 700 approximately. If we talk about fee structure of the course, there are two types of fee structures due to sub-categorization of this course, first is BA LLB (Regular), which is Rs. 10,000 per year. Second is BA LLB (Self-Finance) which is Rs. 40,000 per year. Scholarship is offered to those students who have scored good marks or obtained ranks in class from Dean's Student Welfare fund.

Faculty members are very good and disciplined. Dr. Asad Malik sir is teaching Constitutional Law, Procedural laws, etc. in a very fascinating manner. Dr. Kahkashan Y. Danyal teaching Family Law subjects, Dr. Subhradipta Sarkar Sir is teaching Health Law, Legal Methods, And laws relating to Women and Children. Dr. Qazi Usaman is teaching Property and Corporate Law along with other assistant professors like Faizan Ur Rahman, Momin Noorjahan, Arif Wadood, Sohail Nazim, Nuchat Parveen, etc. Every faculty member has spectacular background and having more than 10 to 15 years of experience. Apart from this, Dr. Sarkar studied from NLUSI Bangalore, Dr. Nuzhat Parveen wrote books that are being studied in Law universities on Criminal Law specifically. Every faculty member whether permanent or temporary, is humble and accessible for solving any problem related to the subject faced by the students. If we talk about teacher-student ratio, there are in-total more than 25 faculty members along with temporary or guest teachers for more than 1500 students. They are very approachable for any student whether talking first time to them or second time without any biasness and prejudice towards any student. My bonding is very good with every teacher in the faculty.

We have Faculty as well as University placement cell at two levels. The placement cell Faculty of Law helps student in connecting with law firms, corporate, senior advocates and even PSUs or government companies. Recently, 2 students have been selected in ONGC and more than 15 students selected in different law firms, chambers of advocates, etc. The university level placement cell also coordinate with faculty's cell for any leads or interaction. The placement opportunity is offered only for final year students in on-campus scenario. There is no year-wise limit in off-campus placement. The average package offered by the recruiters was 10-13 LPA and lowest was 5-6 LPA. Placement cell of faculty also invites partners, senior advocates, law officers, etc. for the purpose of networking and interaction with students.

Yes, we have hostel facility in our university offered to all students after considering distance from the hometown, income level of the household, and a short interview. Each hostel has capacity of total 2,000+ students, hostel where 3 students live in a room with easiness. Girls and boys have separate hostel and are distant from each other. Mess food is good, where veg and non-veg dishes are prepared, and special dishes are offered thrice in a week. There are separate hostel staff or administration taking care of hostel work and welfare of students. Hostel fees is approximately Rs. 40,000, which is considered very modest price with respect to the location in the capital of India. Not staying in hostel, but can tell after listening to my friends' testimonies that they are satisfied with these facilities.

JMI New Delhi’s campus is like green heaven for anybody coming first time in the campus with proper cleanliness and hygiene. Classroom have proper lights, fans, and projector. There is separate library of Faculty along with central library at the core of the campus. There are total 5-6 canteens in whole campus, offering products or food at basic price. There is large and beautiful Sports Complex having stadium, gyms, basketball, football, indoor games, etc. Medical Facility for students, staff, intra-Faculty sports, and security personals are always there. My favorite thing as part of university is free institution subscription to different research portals and library full of updated books or study materials.

Campus life is good but after few years of course. Students become serious regarding their career and having less chitchat, which is obvious. University’s crowd is average but large crowd is expected during any big function or event like foundation day, freshers, farewell, etc. My experience about the campus life is 'okay'. Extra-curricular activities like moot court competitions, debates, quizzes, painting or art, etc. There are various committees and Clubs like Debating Society, Moot Court Committee, Research Committee, Quiz Club, and Pro-Bono Club.
