SMIMS Kanyakumari MBBS Admission are Through NEET Exam

SMIMS Kanyakumari was established in 2006 and has well experienced faculties with over several years of experience. Hence, I chose this Institute over several private Colleges like Tagore. The academics is good. The faculties are very approachable. They have well maintained infrastructure and facilities. The campus is full of greenery and has a calm environment. The Institute has strict rules which have to be followed making it difficult to survive in the initial few days, but as time passes, we will get used to it and it will feel better. The Institute also concentrates more on academics and hence, extracurricular activities are less.

I loved Biology which motivated me to take up this course. The eligibility to get admission is 50 percentile score in NEET exam, which is a competitive exam conducted by NTA. The admission is based on the marks obtained in the exam. The course is for a duration of 4 and a half years followed by internship for a period of 1 year. The course is vast with over 18 subject split over 4 and a half years. The exams are conducted at the end of the year. The exams improve both the clinical as well as the practical skills in the subject.

The fee structure varies depending on the various quota. For Government seats – Rs. 6.00.000/- is the total fees, for management seats the fee is Rs. 20,00,000/- and for NRI quota, the fee is Rs. 30,00,000/-. This includes all the tuition fee, book fee, admission fee, registration fee and caution deposit. For SC/ST and other reservation classes concession of fees is given if there are the first-generation doctors in their family. For Malayalam speaking minority, fee concession is given.

Faculties are well experienced professors who have more than 10 years of experience and have retired from Government colleges like Trivandrum. They are very approachable. The method of teaching is by using PowerPoint presentations and group discussions. The teacher to student ratio is 3:10. Dr. Mukundan sir professor in Department of Anatomy and Dr. Shanta ma’am professor and HOD in Department of Pathology are just amazing the way the teach is mesmerizing and helps us to get a clear idea of the topic is short span of time. They help solve our problems and provide us with all the support needed to help us crack the final examination. They have good clinical skills in the subject and are well experienced.

SMIMS Kanyakumari provides internship soon after completion of the course with a stipend of Rs. 25,000/-. After completion of internship, one can work as Medical Officer in private or any Government Institutions.

The hostels are very clean. The rooms are single rooms with attached bathrooms. The hostels are separate for both boys and girls. The mess food is good. The timings are 8 AM to 9 AM in the morning, 12 PM to 2 PM in the afternoon and 7 PM to 9 PM at night. The hostel warden is strict. The girls’ hostel closes by 6 PM in evening while the boys’ hostel closes at 11 PM. The yearly mess fee is Rs. 60,000/-. Hostel fee is Rs. 1,00,000 per year. Recreational activities like gym and indoor games are available within the hostel itself.

The Institute has a huge library with wide variety of books and the classrooms are air conditioned with a capacity to accommodate 150 students. The seminar halls and conference halls are well maintained. The canteen is open 24x7. There is a store where all stationary things and necessary items can be bought within the campus itself. The campus has high level of security making it safe for hangout at nights. The library is the best part in the Institute as it a treasure of vast knowledge where we as students can learn a lot. The library will be open till 6 PM in the evening.

The campus life is cool. The most awaited and celebrated festival is Onam. The Institute provides holidays for 1 week. During this time, lot of competitions and programs are held. There is football competition held every year. The overall life is fun although initially it is difficult to cope up due to strict rules and regulations, but with time the environment becomes calm and you will enjoy the life in the Institute. The Institute also conducts many academic programs like CME (Continuous Medical Evaluation) to improve the academic knowledge.
