Merit-cum-Means Based Scholarships are Available at Thapar University Patiala

I chose this Thapar University Patiala for my B.Tech mainly because of 2 things , the faculty and the job opportunities it brings for students. Academically, socially and culturally, it is an excellent University. From hackathons, to cultural competitions, all kind of events are organised here. I did not want just a degree, I wanted to study somewhere where I can say after 4 years, that this was a great experience in itself.

I am currently pursuing a B.Tech in Biotechnology. I am passionate about academic research and the coursework. Eligibility criteria for this course is to have aggregate of 75% in the Physics, Biology, and Chemistry in your 12th boards. This is for General category students. Please do check for SC/ST/OBC/EWS. For Biotechnology and Biomedical, the admission process is quite seamless and direct. Whereas for other B.Tech courses after the online application form is filled, you have to sit for the seat/branch allotment rounds. Cancer Biology, Tissue Regeneration, and Stem Cell Therapy are some of the complex courses of my program. Exam schedule is as follows: we have a mid semester exam and an end semester exam, along with quizzes and practical exams. Quizzes are held before both of these main exams, and practical exams are mostly held just before the end semester exams.

A tuition fee for my program is Rs. 2,50,000/- per semester. Yes, at the University, merit-cum-means based scholarships are available for the eligible students. Financial aid is provided for students in need.

Faculty in Biotechnology department of the Thapar University Patiala is versatile. Teachers use whiteboards and their self-made material along with standard books for teaching. We have various activities, which go above and beyond regular lectures. Group discussions, and creative assignments, which take our classroom learning 1 step further. Professors are helpful and truly a great resource for you as a student. Their doors are always open for doubts and questions. Please talk to the professors and build a good relationship with them, you will learn a lot.

There is a Placement Cell at our University. It is there to talk to companies to visit our University. It also conducts group discussions, mock interviews and tests. They even get students in touch with well-placed alumni, so that students can learn what things they should prepare for. Companies like Amazon, Apple, Whirlpool, Blinkit, etc. have visited the University for placement season.

The University has good hostels and pacious rooms. All of them are new or recently renovated. Hostels also have gyms, a cafeteria, and guest rooms for parents if they are visiting. Mess food quality is good. Hostel fees depend on the room type you get. There are AC and Non-AC rooms with an occupancy ranging from 1 to 4 seater. In some 1st year hostels, there are common washrooms, otherwise you get attached washrooms, which are commonly for 2 adjacent rooms. Based on this the lowest cost room is 35000 and highest can reach up to 85000, for 1 semester. Hostel in time is 8:30 PM. My experience at the University’s hostels has been great.

Infrastructure of the University was quite great, with beautiful buildings and parks, and in the last year there have been even more developments. There are restaurants, indoor & outdoor theatres, various seminar rooms, well equipped lecture halls, and library at the campus. There is also an on-campus infirmary and doctor always available along with an ambulance. The campus is wide spread and beautifully maintained. My favorite place has to be the Nirvana garden.

As I said, this University is known for having something for everyone, whether it is academics or for your hobbies or interests. In addition, the best thing is this University makes sure that it gives its students a platform, not only in campus but also amongst other people. There are so many programs and events, which allow students to go and perform at bigger stages. Our annual fest i.e., Saturnalia is organised on a grand scale & people look forward to it throughout the year. I was a part of 3 societies.
