Hooghly Women's College Hooghly is Affiliated to University of Burdwan

Hooghly Women's College is one of the best Colleges you can have if you want to approach Microbiology as career. It also provides other courses of Science & Social Science subjects like Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Nutrition, Zoology, Botany, Economics, Bengali, English, History, Political Science, Sanskrit, Philosophy, Education, Geography, Music, etc. I chose this Institution as it provides good education and the atmosphere is very supportive. This College is NAAC accredited and is affiliated to the University of Burdwan. It has facilities like Library and provides other courses as well.

I chose the course B.Sc in Microbiology because of the increase in demand of this field after the COVID pandemic. During my time, we needed good scores in 12th boards in order to get enrolled here. The admission process was fully online and followed by a physical verification process. The form fill up generally started in the months of August and September. We had a core course and some additional courses & subjects alongwith the main subject to increase our knowledge domain. For my course, Zoology/Botany and Chemistry were introduced as additional subjects. There were main semester exams and internal examinations other than activities like presentation & dissertation writing which helped in the Research field. It is a very much practical based course so it helped us to solve real world problems in the Healthcare and Medicine sector.

The fee was affordable and there was an Examination fees for each Semester exam. There were scholarships and financial aids available as per the government guidelines.

The faculty members were very much knowledgeable in their respective fields. They mainly focused on practical-based knowledge and teaching. They used various means of audio visual aids to teach us like Group Projects, Presentations, Blackboards, and also Video-based. The faculty was very good at problem-solving and they were very good mentors. They always supported and encouraged us to grow and build a strong career. They were very much approachable and guided us not only throughout the course but also in making career choices. There was also a good teacher-student ratio where the teachers could focus on every individual to guide and mentor them.

Although there was no active Placement Cell available but the teachers guided us and introduced us to various career opportunities that we might choose from.

There was Hostel facility available for the College students. The hostel Mess also provided good quality food. Since, I didn't experience staying in the hostel so I cannot state much detail about it.

At the Hooghly Women's College , there were different blocks. There were special Smart Classrooms with AV aids for better understanding and normal Classroom facilities were also available. Other facilities included Library, Labs, Seminar Rooms, Auditorium Hall, Conference Room, etc. There was also a Gymnasium and a Canteen. There were students’ support services like Equal Opportunity Cell, Students Common Room, & NSS Unit to ensure students’ access to equal opportunity, grow students’ leadership skills, and social service skill enhancement to socialise. There was also a reading room and restrooms available for the students.

The overall campus life was very enjoyable and study-focused. There were some major events and fests conducted where students got to socialise and showcase their skills. It also encouraged students to approach many different perspectives on educational values. An annual social event was conducted here where students could partner in various fields and enjoy the cultural programme. Many seminars were organised where reputed speakers were invited and they presented new information and widened our knowledge domain.
