My overall experience in Sido Kanhu Murmu University was really nice so far. I took admission in Master of Arts because I wanted to prepare for my JPSC and JET exams side by side. The main factor why I chose this university is that it is very close to my home and the fee structure is very affordable for normal students. If anyone wants to focus on self-study for government jobs then they should definitely come here because there is no strict attendance pressure. The most different thing about this University is that the professors are very chill and they will help you with external exam topics also if you go to them. The library has good books for sociology and other arts subjects. Overall, it is a very decent place to complete your degree.

The fee structure is very cheap here. I paid around Rs. 3000/- to Rs. 4000/- per year for my MA degree which include admission and tuition charges. SC ST students also get good discount and state government provide scholarship if you apply on time. It is very affordable for middle class.

The faculty members in sociology department are supportive and well qualified. Most of them have done Ph.D from big Universities. They mostly use blackboards for teaching and sometimes they arrange group discussion also in the class. The best part is their problem solving nature. Since I am preparing for JPSC, they guide me a lot after the class timings. The teacher student ratio is decent like 1 professor for 40 students. You can easily approach them in staff room if you have any doubt regarding your career or syllabus. We share a very good bond with our HOD sir.

To be very honest there is no placement cell for arts students in our university. Mostly companies come for MBA or engineering students only. However, in MA sociology no one expects any corporate job because almost 90 percent of the batch is preparing for government exams like JPSC SSC or teaching jobs. Therefore, nobody cares about placement activities. If you want private sector jobs then this course and University is not for you. However, our teachers guide us for competitive exams and interview preparation, which is very helpful for our future career.

The university provides hostel facility for both boys and girls separately. However, the seats are limited so you have to apply early. I did not stay in the hostel because my house is very close to the campus. However, my friends tell me that the rooms are decent and they share one room between two or three students. The mess food is average. Hostel fee is very nominal compared to outside private rooms. They have strict timings for girl’s hostel in the evening.

The campus size is very huge and it has lot of greenery everywhere. The arts block is little bit old but still maintained nicely. Classrooms are quite big with normal seating arrangement for around 60 to 70 students but there are no smart classes or projector in our department. We have a very big central library where I spend mostly my time reading books for my competitive exams. The canteen food is okay type but very cheap. My favorite place is the big playground where we sit in winter afternoons. They also have basic medical facilities for emergency.

The overall campus life is very peaceful and slow paced. The crowd mostly comes from nearby villages and towns so everyone is very simple and down to earth. There are not much fancy clubs or societies like private Universities but we celebrate some big festivals and annual sports day very nicely. Saraswati puja is celebrated with grand level in our university and everyone participate in it. Mostly students are busy with their own studies and career preparation so the environment is mostly academic and quiet. I really like my time here because I got good friends who are also studying for same exams.
