D.G. Ruparel College of Arts Science and Commerce B.Com Review By Nidhi Kamble

D.G. Ruparel College is undoubtedly one of the best institutions in Mumbai. The college is managed and run by the Modern Education Society, Pune. Ruparel College is quite a distinguished institute to pursue your dream. The college has different buildings for each of the faculty, i.e. Arts, Commerce, & Science. The staff at Ruparel College is packed with highly experienced and excellent staff members. The majority of the staff members are into teaching for 25-30 years. The canteen of Ruparel College is its heart. Nearly 30 food items are available in the canteen. Hence, you can relish tasty delicacies whenever you are hungry. Moreover, the food items that are available in the canteen are quite reasonable. Talking about the college’s infra, the building is a little old but the interior is new. The library is the most crowded place in the college as it has a fabulous repository of books available. Also, the college building has a separate reading hall where you can study with your friends. College also has its own playground which is rare in Mumbai colleges. The playground is lush green and has football turf, cricket pitches, and a basketball court among many others. Other facilities of the college include relaxation areas on the lawn, boy’s hostel building, and stationery shop among others. The college also organizes various events and activities every month to keep the students busy with something or the other. The college was started way back in 1952 and since then many famous personalities such as Aishwarya Rai, Ajit Agarkar, Antara Mali, and former RBI deputy governor Viral Acharya have been an alumnus of D.G. Ruparel College. The college’s exposure to social and cultural activities is what drove my attention towards Ruparel College.

The admission process is simple as you fill the college form and then the college list releases a merit list accordingly for the required stream. The faculty also helps in knowing the admission procedure. Hence after spending 4 years in college, I can proudly say that the college is satisfying when it comes to teaching faculty and the extra-curricular activities that college organizes.

The cut-off list scales new highs every year and hence you can have a fair idea about the importance that this college has for studies. Unlike many other colleges, the college has zero-tolerance towards less attendance and after 1 warning the students have been denied to appear in the exams as well. The commerce college is affiliated with the University of Mumbai and the course is similar to that of other commerce colleges in Mumbai.

The lecturers in the college quest for academic excellence and hence extra classes are organized almost every week. Every attempt is made by the professors to make sure that their students score well in the University exams. However, research work and practical sessions are also given equal importance as the college believes in developing a multi-dimensional personality of the students to fulfill the needs of the community and industry at large.

Faculty is highly experienced and commerce is one stream where this college has always scored heavily at the university exams. This wouldn’t have been possible without the experienced faculty that this college has. Students who are weak in studies are handled with extra care and I can say this as I am among those. The check on faculty is kept by our principal Dr. Tushar M Desai as all the professors submit their report cards from time to time.

The faculty also keeps a deep check on student’s performance and you can’t escape if you constantly score-less in your exams. This is what makes Ruparel an edge above others.

Well since I am doing B.Com, I can’t expect a hefty pay package after graduation as BMS students are preferred over B.Com students. Still, 40-50% of B.Com students too get placed every year with a package of early Rs. 3-5 lakhs. Mr. H A. Lokhande is the placement officer and the college has made a cell where students who wish to get posted can get in touch with him. Students who have maintained grades do get placed. Banks like ICICI, SBI, and BOB are some of the top recruiters since a long time. Share Khan, P&G, and HUL are also among the companies that have recruited Ruparelites for a long time now.

The college also provides placement training and hence, if you have failed to make a cut through the campus, you can still find a job after passing out. The college tries their best that maximum students get placed and this is something which needs a special mention about this college.

There’s a boys hostel building on the campus but no girls hostel. This was sad to see as one of my cousins from Ahmadabad wanted to join the college but her parents refused as there’s no girls hostel. The management should look into this. The boy's hostel building is huge and accommodates nearly 75 students. Since I haven’t seen the building from inside, I don’t know how the rooms are. Interacting with some of the students that stay in the hostel, they said that the rooms are spacious and also have a very good mess.

Also, the hostel has all the basic facilities like mess, live running water, RO water for drinking and laundry services among many others. Ragging is strictly banned in the hostel and students getting involved in such acts are given severe punishments. The hostel in time is 10 pm and students are not allowed to enter the hostel post that.

Where have you seen a 5 story Library? Yes, Ruparel College has such a humongous library. I don’t have the count the number of books that the library has but I am sure even the college won’t have that figure. The college is excellent and is also vast. There is almost everything available inside the college campus. There’s a medical facility at the college campus. The college was renovated recently but in hindsight, the building looks a little old. Classrooms are hi-tech and PPT is used for making study easier for students.

The canteen as mentioned earlier is the heart of our college. One thing which needs a special mention is the college’s well equipped Gymkhana. The gymkhana has all the necessary equipment for indoor and outdoor sports. In the college’s gymkhana, an air-rifle shooting range has been installed. The college has also hired sports teacher to make sure that students interested in sports pursue their dreams and bring laurel to the nation. Ajit Agarkar is one such name. The college campus also has a boys hostel and round the clock, security is provided to the students studying in the college.

If you want to enjoy college life then the Ruparel college campus is one such place. The college is safe for girls as round the clock security is provided to each student. Closed-circuit television cameras are installed inside the college campus covering every length and breadth of college. The best part about college is the journey of learning as learning was given the utmost importance. Each stream organizes their own fest and our department host the annual event called Arthotsav. The college event over the years has garnered immense appreciation and love from colleges across the city in Mumbai.

The seniors were of great help and life in the college campus was quite fun. Also, the college used to arrange fresher’s party, jam sessions, and hence I will have to admit that I never felt the reason for missing college even for a single day. The college location was such that you had the access to all the transport facilities at ease. Being called a Ruparelite by students of other colleges gives me a sense of satisfaction.
