Dr. Ambedkar College of Commerce & Economics B.Com Review By Vishnu Bishnoi

Dr. Ambedkar College of Commerce & Economics was established way back in 1972. The college is run by the People Education Society's trust and located on Tilak Road Extension in Wadala. Our college started with the aim of spreading knowledge among the poor people of society and no fees were charged then from them. The college is affiliated with Mumbai University and is run by some of the most experienced staff. The courses offered by our colleges include B.Com, B.B.I., B.Sc IT, and M.Com. Our college offers B.Com specialization in economics and that is why our college is among the most favored college in central Mumbai.

The admission process is based on a merit basis and for post-graduate courses, the students have to go through an entrance exam. The application form is available online and the list also comes online. Gone are the days when you had to stand in queue and check whether your name appears on the list or not. Our college was one of the first colleges to go completely digital when it comes to the admission process. College staff, infrastructure, canteen is just perfect. I fell in love with this college from the very first year. Teachers of economics and finance are among the best. The way our professors deliver their lectures is also top-class. The cut-off for admission in B.Com was around 84%. The college has almost all the facilities and to find a large campus like ours in Mumbai is rare. College is known for providing excellent placement and students from our college have gone places in the past. The college has strength of nearly 7000 students including junior college, Degree College, and post-graduate college. My college endeavor to help the student in the overall development and therefore importance to sports and extra-curricular activities is given. Our college campus has a good enough playground and also owns a huge sports ground at Naigaon Cross Road in Wadala.

Our college has the top staff and is known for quality studies. Attendance in lectures, internal assessments, and tutorial tests is compulsory. A minimum of 75% attendance is compulsory in each subject otherwise students are denied to appear in the exams. Also, the list of students whose attendance is less than required attendance is put up on the notice board every month. Now you can imagine the importance that our college gives to academics. Our college has produced toppers at the University exams more often than not. The portion is the same as the university portion but our college has included some extra books just to make sure that students are always burdened with studies.

Sometimes it feels like a curse that why have I taken admission in this college when I could have got admission in any college. Well, the answer to that is supporting staff who are always available to help the students and also accommodate extra classes post-college hours in case of queries. The classes have projectors and that is how we are being taught. Our college includes maximum practical sessions and has always urged students to not miss the practical sessions. I have not seen this anywhere and this is something which has made this college the best commerce college in central Mumbai.

So much has already been said about the qualified and experienced staff that our college has. Right from our principal Dr. S. R. Kamble to our accounts professor Mr. Satya Prakash Borshe all of them are quite friendly. Our professors take care of the syllabus and one thing that makes our college special is internal exams that our college conducts before the university exams. Respective teachers of that department take their subject exams and identify the students who need some extra attention. Our college faculty have always maintained the thought of giving the best education to their students.

In addition to studies, our professors also share jokes during classes to lighten the mood, and when the same things I discussed with my friends from other colleges they were shocked. Yes, our faculty staff is easily approachable and always takes the initiative to help out the students. Our faculty has also taken care of making sure that students don’t have to go to private tuitions as they conduct extra classes more often than not and clear your doubts in college itself.

Have you ever heard B.Com students getting placed? Yes, students from our college have. Many gun banks such as Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, Bandhan Bank, and HDFC Bank have long been the top recruiters. Also, college has a placement cell that helps you find the placement. While in the final semester the college gets us an internship with some of the big names in corporate. Unfortunately, though, I am in my last year and can’t get selected as an intern due to covid. Having said that college has ensured us that they will help students get placements from the college itself.

The college holds a very nice reputation and students of Dr. Ambedkar College do find their way of achieving success in life as they are groomed by some of the finest teachers on earth. Having said that ratio of students getting places from college is less and the package range from Rs. 3-6 lakhs per annum.

This is an issue which the college needs to address. They had a hostel on the campus but a few years back they closed it and students coming from other states now find it difficult to find accommodation. Accommodation in Mumbai is too expensive and hence people from lower-middle-class families can’t afford to have an education in our college as there is no hostel facility. However many students of our college stay in MU hostel in Kalina.

That hostel is so poorly maintained and its like beggars can’t be choosers as they have no other option. However, the people who can afford can stay in nearby premises of the college. There are some lavish buildings and they are ready to shed their house on rent to students. Also, the PG facility around the college is easily available. However not having a college hostel is still something that college should think about.

Our college is huge and to find a college as huge as ours it will take some doing. The college has a state-of-the art library and that has over 50 thousand books. The college has arguably one of the best computer labs. It can accommodate nearly 100 students at a time. However, one has to take permission from the lab in-charge as it is built specifically for practical and course-related work. Our college has a huge assembly hall that can accommodate 2000 students at a time. Our college has a well-equipped gymkhana that is laced with all the gym equipment and sports materials.

College also has a huge play-ground on the campus and also has a separate sports ground where annual sports day is held. All the classrooms are IT enabled and a large projector is installed for teachers to teach students. As per college dimensions canteen, I feel is quite small. People stand in a queue to have their numbers and I and my friends have hardly gone to the canteen in 2 and half years that I have had in this college. The college building is still the same but is well-maintained and the interiors have been changed recently. For students, security CCTV cameras are installed in numbers.

Unlike other colleges of Mumbai, our college doesn’t boast the crows that come from a highly privileged background. However, you will find students who are serious in their life and want something in their life. Hence you can smell the positivity from the time you enter the college. The college has all the basic facilities and students can study in a very peaceful environment. Studies have always been given the top priority in our college and hence guest lectures and conferences are organized almost every month.

College also organizes yoga workshops and Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in 2019. All the students were asked to participate in that and not just the college campus we cleaned various parts of Wadala and this initiative from our college was highly appreciated. Our college also organizes an annual social gathering and this I believed to be the best time to socialize with teachers and seniors. Marathi Bhasa Gaurav Divas is also celebrated and celebrities are also invited during the event. All in all our college is meant for the ones who are serious about studies.
