Feroze Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology B.Tech Review By Tejas Pandey

I completed my B.Tech degree from FGIET, Raebareli. I got admission in this college from the rank that I pursued in AIEEE. This college may not be among the top-ranked institutions in the country but if you compare it with the institutes in the state of Uttar Pradesh, our institute is arguably among the top- rated. However, the reason why I chose this college was that I got the branch of my choice. The campus is amazing and huge and is spread across 22 acres of land. Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi inaugurated the college way back in 1976 as she used to contest from this very constituency. The college which was started as a Feroze Gandhi Polytechnic Institute in 1976 became the Feroze Gandhi Institute of Engineering & Technology in the year 2004. This time it was Mrs. Sonia Gandhi who came for inauguration.

The best part is that the college takes admissions based on merit and you will hardly find students who enter through back doors. AIEEE and UPSEE Entrance Examination are the two entrance exams whose scores are considered. The college is a Semi Govt college and is affiliated with Uttar Pradesh Technical University, Lucknow. The atmosphere in the college is amiable and students feel focused and veracious inside the college campus as the seniors and professors are always fun to talk with. The college campus as mentioned earlier is spacious and the college campus has an indoor & outdoor games facility, recreation room, auditorium hall, huge hostel, and round-the-clock reading facility for its students in the library.

I don’t know whether I should say this or not but if you can’t study on your own then don’t join this college. The syllabus is vast and not just in my time but I have asked many seniors and well and they all have agreed that teachers have failed to complete the portions. However, a complaint was lodged to the director sir and he said he will look into this matter but nothing changed. However the facilities such as the computer lab, physics lab, or the library are well equipped. They have all the latest facilities and the practical sessions thankfully are better than the theory sessions.

The professors too keep telling us that practical sessions are compulsory and these are the ones where you need to be attentive. Having said that to clear your exams, neither college nor teachers will play a crucial role in it as the major part will have to be done by your self-study and taking notes from the detailed reference books.

As already mentioned in the academics part, faculty to be honest is pathetic. Most of the teachers in the college are just B.Tech and don’t hold much of an experience and still they have been hired. Since I have got the opportunity, I will mention it that most of the teachers that are in the college have passed from the same college and got the job because of their local approach. If you ask a logical question, the teachers start telling you other stories and hence your questions remained unsolved. In some cases if the question is tough, the professor used to get irritated and will ask you some other question. This is the story about the faculty and sadly it’s true.

However, there are few professors who do their job sincerely and have made sure that you pass your exams with flying colors. All said and done but the professors of this college are something that has let the college name down in embarrassment. Since the last decade no student from the college has been managed to top at the university level and the only reason for that is college faculty. The college is not tight-fisted when it comes to spending as they provided world-class labs and every other facility provided by the college is just first class.

If the college won’t have good professors then how can placement be good enough? On the college website, they have claimed that their placement is 100%. I challenge that as it is not even 20%. Yes, many companies attended the campus but soon realized that students don’t have sufficient knowledge and hence they went empty handed. Soon I came to know the story of the placement is the same and only a few who are self-made have been able to grab placements and the rest had to find it themselves including me.

Many companies such as VIVO, Epsilon Wings, Indiamart, Tata, and Indus Towers among others visited in 2019, and as I said only 20% of people got placed. The average package that they got was INR 4 lakhs and the highest from our batch grabbed Rs. 8 lakhs. This is high time and college should take care of this department seriously as after 4 years of struggle when we don’t get jobs from the campus, only we know how it feels.

If I have been critical about the teachers then I will praise the management in this department. The hostel is something that I bet is hard to find. Clean and spacious rooms with all the facilities such as indoor games, hot and cold water, RO water for drinking, cleaning facility, mess facility, and security. All of them will have to say was top-notch. Absolutely top-notch will be an understatement, I would say.

Unfortunately, because I was a local resident, I was not allowed to stay in the hostel but visited often as my friends used to stay there and I enjoyed all the time that I spent there. In addition to the hostel, there are also quite a few paying guests and rooms available where outsiders used to stay. The food in the hostel is something that needs just a little improvement otherwise the hostel scores 10/10.

The college is huge or should I say humongous. The college has everything that one can ask for. All the best labs, a nice library, excellent playground, auditorium, stage to host the annual event, and whatnot. The college has spent generously in building the infrastructure of this college. The classrooms, labs, all are well maintained and all the classrooms at post-graduate levels are air-conditioned as well.

The college has a huge Engineering Drawing Hall which is equipped with modern drawing stools and tables that is used by various students for machine and engineering drawing. College also used to take students for excursions and educational tours. The college hosts a fest every year called “ANUSANDHAN & TECHNO-FEST” and a lot of students participate in that. Also, the footage from the fest is shown in local newspapers and news channels. Hence the infrastructure of the college is nothing but the best.

Campus life was cool and unlike big cities, you won’t find people talking in English or something like that. Local flavor was on the menu as 95% of students were from Uttar Pradesh itself. The college campus that boasts of various activities always kept the students at bay. The study part was more dependent on tuitions and therefore the professors too passed on if the students failed to attend lectures. Hence too be honest I didn’t have over 30% attendance and still was allowed to appear for exams. Thus if you chuck that part there’s nothing which this college doesn’t have.

The canteen and library are the two places where students spend most of their time. The college canteen is nice and serves the finest tea and samosas. The college also had a medical shop and an in-house medical team so in case of emergency, one doesn’t have to rush to the hospital. Also, almost all the areas of the city are well-connected to the college and therefore it was easy to reach the college. Overall if you have a strong will that you can do it without the help of teachers then I must say the syllabus is excellent as it covers all the aspects. Hence if you can do self-study, you will surely have a great time at FGIET.
