New Horizon College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Yathika Evangelin

I am in my second year engineering and my over review of the college would be, it has a lot of teachers who teach well. Placements are good. Not just studies there a lot of other activities going on in the campus. We have good lab facilities and canteen services. Hostel in the campus, they have both boys and girls hostel. The college campus contains both engineering and degree students. Holidays are provided when required. The college is ranked 114th among top most engineering colleges across India. It is an autonomous college which is permanently affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU).

Syllabus is easy to understand and apply practically. I am a management student, and my admission process was quiet easy, didn’t take much time, but I guess it takes time for students coming through entrance exams. We do have good facilities of library, student and teachers can get access to books from home through our website. Sport activities are also encouraged in the college. They do have college cricket, football and other teams as well. Other indoor games such as table tennis and carom are also encouraged. Seminars and other certificate courses are held often. Overall I would suggest students who want to pursue engineering can join the college.

I have join electronics and communication engineering. I have picked this course out of my individual interest. I personally enjoy electronics, because it keeps things interesting for me. I have joined this course through management seat. Admission process was quite smooth, didn’t face any problem. A minimum 60% should be scored in 12th in core subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, physics and biology to be eligible to apply for management seats. They have allotted a percentage of seats for students applying through entrance exams as well. The fee is comparatively less for students applying through entrance exam seats.

The subjects in electronics and communication course is as expected, all the subjects are interesting. The subjects are also easy to understand, the concepts if learnt properly are easy to apply too. We have a total of five main subjects in every semester and 1 or 2 subjects that teach us things which as engineers we need to know and apply. The course would be very useful to get a job. Even in few years if the technology differs, the scope for electronics and communication would be high. As electronics is the base, this course has high scope even in IT field.

I am not very sure about the number of faculties, but what I am sure of is that as students we don’t have to worry about the faculty count. There are sufficient numbers of faculties to handle each subject. The faculties have good experience in teaching; most of them are PhD holders. Almost all the teachers teach well, they do not hesitate to repeat the topic if not understood. Teachers clarify doubts when approached with them.

The students are divided into group, and each group is mentored by a particular teacher. This is apart from class teacher. Any problem we face in college, we can approach our mentors and they would help us as much as possible. Teachers take help of different technologies to teach such as smart boards. We also have a counselor who helps us in any kind of problem when approached, not just related to college life, but also personal problem. The faculties are easy to approach and very helpful while doing projects and assignments. Even the non teaching staffs are very helping, such as the staffs in the lab etc. teachers make sure we understand the concepts well. Teachers do give us notes just for reference.

As I am in my 3rd semester I don’t know much about the placement training. But the college starts off teaching with communication skills from the 1st year, therefore by the time we attend interview we are prepared with how to communicate. The teachers also train us with other skills that are required when we are working, in a very basic level in the 1st and 2nd year.

Top companies that have visited our campus are HP India, Infosys, TCS etc. They have Japan career center that provides international placement opportunity. The highest package provided was a 22 lakhs package, from a Japan company.

Yes, the college does have hostel facilities. The hostels are located in the college campus itself. There are separate hostel for boys and girls. There are over 1000 student who use hostel facilities. They also provide wi-fi for the students staying in the hostel.

The food provided is quite tasty. Both veg and non veg are available. There are also laundry facilities. Around 3 or 4 blocks are allotted as hostel, since the hostel is in the campus at lunch time students can have lunch in the hostel mess and come back to class on time. Security is well trained and experienced

The total area of campus is 1 acre; the campus has about 5 to 6 blocks. The infrastructure of the college is good, class rooms are well ventilated and bright enough. Every class room has sufficient lights and fans. They have playground, indoor and outdoor basketball court and also a room to play indoor sports like table tennis and carom. We have 3 different cafeterias. Which provides both veg and non veg. every corner has RO drinking water installed. Washroom after clean and well maintained. Every floor has an emergency exit door and also a fire extinguisher. Laboratories are well designed, spacious enough.

They have a 600 to 700 seater auditorium. Almost every block has a seminar hall. They have a two floor library. One floor consists of digital library, borrows books is an easy process. There is a separate hall where we can discuss our projects. Emergency services, there is an ambulance in the campus in case of any emergency. There is also a resting room. We have a stationary store and a Xerox store in the campus. There is also bank in the campus. With all of these facilities there is no need for one to go out of campus. The campus is wi-fi enabled, they also have bus transport facility available.

There is always opportunity to take part in activities not just related to studies. Under every department, there are minimum two clubs. There are 14 clubs for extracurricular activities such as dance, music etc. There are five sports clubs, such as volleyball, football etc. We have an annual inter college fest called SARGAM. It is a very popular fest, around 100 colleges take part in the fest, which is more than 15000 students take part. Every club has events happening now and then, it is very helpful especially to remove the barrier between seniors and juniors. To join the extracurricular activities club we need to audition. All these events keep the campus life interesting. Special occasion days such as Kannada Rajyotsava, Yoga Day and other days like these are also celebrated.

Seminars are conducted often, not just studies related. Seminars on our health related topics, things we need to know as young citizens of our country are held often. Seminars are not just one way communication, we as students get to interact as well. The college also takes part in our college’s fests. They have also won trophies. We do have educational tours. Helps us interact with people outside the college environment.
