Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology, formerly Science College is situated 9Km away from Main Jorhat Town, near the NH17. This was established in 1971 as a Science college but later promoted to an Engineering College in 2009. The College is a prominent Institution in Assam and approved by AICTE. This is affiliated to Assam Science and Technology University and Run by DTE, Assam of Assam State Government. It is offering Various Courses in Bachelor and Master Level. B.Tech in 4 Branches, M.Sc and B.Sc in 4 branches and B.Sc (IT). Engineering Branches include Civil; Mechanical; Power Electronics and Instrumentation and Electronics and Telecommunication. General Science courses available are Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

All Faculties are selected by Government with Lots of Tests and qualification. Again college management ensures the entire college to be managed nicely. The student union and different clubs are also involved in this. One can take a Seat in engineering section by clearing Combined Entrance Exam and on the other courses by clearing the test taken by the college. You can get information about the entrances on JIST’s official website. But CEE related information is available only in DTE Assam and ASTU website. The transportation facilities are beyond awesome here, as you can see it’s situated near the highway, unlike most other Engineering Colleges.

I was always wanted to be a Civil Engg. So I took admission in B.Tech. To get a seat in engineering in JIST, you have to attend CEE exam. If you clear the cutoff of that year, you get invited on the Counseling process. On the venue itself, you have to fill up forms and select your desired college among Assam Government Run Colleges. If you get selected for JIST, then you have to attend next round on the College on a prescribed that. There they check all your documents and give you admission. Unlike this, for getting into B.Sc or M.Sc courses, you have to visit the college or portal. Then you fill-up required forms and give an exam. If you get selected, you are admitted to the College. All the Courses they provide are B.Sc in Physics, Chemistry, Maths, B.Tech in Civil, Mechanical, PEI, ETC, BSc in IT and M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry, Maths. For engineering, you have to pass 10+2 with a minimum of 50% on PCM and have to clear 5 subjects including PCM and English. Sometimes the requirement may change and it will notify by ASTU and DTE websites. To do B.Sc or M.Sc you must score more than 55% in previous exams. Mere applying and clearing cutoff don’t ensure your admission until you present on the admission date and do all the formalities. As I mentioned, my Branch is B.Tech (Civil Engineering).

The faculty of my branch is Good, if not the Best. But their willingness to teach is appreciable. As a technical institution, Our Branch lakes a Good Infrastructure, but all the machinery and equipment are available. So, you get no major issues in the study. Interestingly it also provides you training for GATE exam in the final year. You also get Job opportunities via campus placement.

The College faculty is selected by Government Norms so you can expect knowledgeable teaching staff in the College. You will get more or less same kind of faculty in every college under ASTU. They are very strict but friendly in Nature. Attendance and Uniforms are taken seriously. The Practical, Assignments and Classes are very regular so if you cannot get involved from the beginning you will feel like being left. The total faculty is around 50 but most of them are servicing on a contractual basis. You will find many charterers here. Some are strict as hell and some will care you like own child. Some you will love to learn from and some will give you free attendance (Very rare thou).

Most engineering teachers are passed out from different State engineering Colleges and some are from NIT. You will enjoy the four years journey with them if you want to. I don’t know much about M.Sc but Science department are also have enough eligible teachers. Every teaching staff is super cool in their branches and has a lot to offer. You just need to be active, regular and interested to gain from them. JIST faculty is overall fantastic if you eliminate one or two. This is seen everywhere by the way.

As a New Institution in Engineering, the placement sceneries are not Much Good here. But still, from last year many prominent companies visited the campus placement. Sadly there is no such provision for B.Sc students. Infosys, Luit Minerals, Amazon, Vodafone, ONGS, NAPCO etc visited campus to hire students. The training and placement cell of JIST is working very efficiently in the matter. They often conduct seminars and training sessions to boost up your credentials. The companies not only look after your marks but skills too.

You get various Opportunities to enhance the skills and ideas to prepare for future jobs. They also help you to get opportunities in Internship in Winter and Summer vacations of every year. Our seniors get some Good Placements previously. If you can score good and expressive for your talent, it’s easy to get placement from the Campus. The competitions are low, it’s easier to crack dream if you are passionate.

JIST has hostel facility for needed students. The 3 Boys hostel are named JORBEEM, JIST boys hostel 2 and 3. The girl's hostel has 2 building, namely Old and New. The Food to Accommodation is up to the mark. I mean, bathrooms, rooms, food quality are good enough to continue hostel life. You will not face any extreme ragging there.

Hostel fees are also low like around Rs. 1500 to Rs. 1800 so that any student can afford to pursue higher studies from here. You also get opportunities to participate in various events celebrated on the hostels. Private hostels are also available near the campus.

If JIST lakes something, that is the infrastructure. The college is old and adopted engineering section recently. So, you will see a poor infrastructure as compared to other Technical Colleges. Due to some unforeseen reasons, the constructions are delayed. So, you may get disappointed on first sight. The buildings are separated for IT, Science and Engineering Sections. The main Old building is used for administration and science classes. A particularly new Building is designed for library and IT students. The Engineering section is the most recent infrastructure. But, most of them are incomplete to date. Yet, all the departments are highly equipped with essential laboratories. If you don’t bother about Buildings’ look and flooring, you don't have much to complain about.

Just the main reason people don’t like is JIST doesn’t look like an Engineering College. The road on the campus is also not that good but you can easily roam around. The Bike stand is also good. Besides all these, you get Common rooms for Boys and Girls separately for relaxations. A lot’s of games are also there. The Library of JIST is big enough and has various kinds of books and magazines. You can get almost every book on the syllabus here. The other books are also sufficient enough for knowledge hunger. The Canteen here is famous for Tea and has 2 sections, for teachers and Students. You can eat here at budget price.

JIST campus will offer you a lifelong experience with both sweat and bitter memories together. The infrastructure may disappoint you, but the overall life in college is pretty interesting. Regular 3 Buses are here for the town to campus, which eases your life to survive. The canteen can feed your stomach in class offs. The Boy’s Common room and Girls Common room are well furnished with essential things. I am not allowed to visit Boy’s but Girls’ Common room has a dressing mirror, attached bathroom and games to play. The basketball court is big enough to practice and there is a vast playground too. The Road to the hostels is decorated with Eucalyptus, the most romantic and friends zone to hangout. The “S” shaped pond and the botanical garden is a great attraction. You can enjoy each moment until you don’t create a mess for Authority (or until you don’t get caught). At JIST we enjoy various festivals. From New Year to Christmas, Holi to Diwali... everything you will find here. But most of the time, hostellers are the main doer.

The main attraction is Fresher, Annual Festival and “Abhiyantrix”. The annual fest is as same as any other college in India. Union body held various Sports, Literature, Cultural competitions and on the Finale date, they do procession, cultural shows and price ceremony. Fresher Social is also almost the same, one-day event. We invite some guests, does an introduction program for newbies and they show their talents. But, ABHIYANTRIX is full of fun Event with DJ night. Ramp show and all those fancy events. It's the tech fest, and platform to show knowledge and intellect. If you are interested to join clubs, you have many options. You have several clubs to join and enjoy. Cultural society, Electronic hobby, chemical society, photography club, quiz forum, debate forum etc. JCWS, the cultural society is the big one till date. In one word, JIST life is going to be memorable for students.
