Burdwan Dental College and Hospital is a government dental college that is recognised under West Bengal University of Health Sciences and affiliated to Dental Council of India. The college is also attached to a dental hospital. It was established in 2009 and intakes 100 students every year based on merit list prepared by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences. Situated in the small town of Burdwan, in the outskirts of Kolkata is connected via road and rail for easy transportation. It ranks second in state after R. Ahamed Dental College and Hospital, Sealdah.

The students have to qualify the all India NEET UG exam to take admission here. Every year the cut off varies depending upon the number of seats and the rank obtained. Burdwan Dental College is a quite promising place to help you cherish your dreams of becoming a Dentist. With well equipped laboratories and immense patient exposure, you will stay a step ahead of the rest in developing your delicate skill full hands that are an asset to a dentist. The admission is done in 4 rounds as per the NEET counseling procedures. When allotted BDCH, the students have to report here on the specified date and time. After checking the relevant papers and certificates, the student is admitted in the college.

I joined this college in 2015 for my Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS) course. I was admitted via the WBJEEM exam (In 2015 state medical entrance exam was conducted). After the online counseling, I was allotted this college. All the aspiring doctors aim to fulfill their dreams of wearing that white coat and diagnosing patients, which brings them to this college. Dentistry is a specialising field of the medical sciences that demands to have every knowledge of head, neck and oral part of the human body. BDCH will help you love your decision to choose to study BDS over MBBS.

During the 4 years course that includes a 1 year compulsory internships, you will be introduced to several medical and dental subjects like Anatomy, Surgery, Medicine, Dental Anatomy, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery to name a few. If you are a nerd and have the intense desire to become a successful doctor, this college and this course will be a blessing for you. You can definitely open up yourself clinic anywhere in India after obtaining the West Bengal Dental Council Registration. You may also get selected in Army Dental Corps or any government organisations after passing out from this college via qualifying NEET MDS exam.

There are around 50 highly qualified faculties who are always ready to help you out with your theory and practical knowledge. All the faculties hold a master's degree, MDS in their respective departments, some of our professors hold a PhD degree and have numerous papers published under their names. Apart from the academic excellence, the professors are also eminent practitioners and will teach you every details of treating patients.

Most of the professors are having more than 30 years of teaching experience; some recently appointed professors have an experience of 10-15 years. All of them are endowed with knowledge and wisdom in their respective subjects. You can approach them for any doubts and they will definitely clear it. The professors will also help you in lab work and in any kind of clinical work, whenever needed. Presently the college is only providing bachelor degree and will soon start conducting master's degree. The clinical duties start from third year onwards, and the students are allotted the departments in a scheduled way. The faculties will guide you in every step from taking history of the patients to giving incisions over a cyst. As it is a government hospital, faculties often get transferred to a different hospital, bit is replaced by another highly qualified academician.

Sadly there is no placement cell in our college just as any other dental college in India. Here we are trained to perform any dental surgeries and procedures from extracting a tooth to managing road traffic accidents to fabricating dentures for patients to performing accurate RCTs. All the amenities required for successfully carrying out these procedures are provided here.

Since, it's a government hospital, all the patients are given free treatment, which draws a flood of patients from the nearby villages and cities which are slightly economically deprived. Such huge number of patients helps the budding dentists practice rigorously. Since present scenario for dental students is they have to gain skill to survive in this competition, Burdwan Dental College and Hospital will help you acquire knowledge and skills. Our alumni is well established Dentists all across West Bengal and abroad. Several are doing masters degree from reputed colleges across India and abroad. Many have been placed in Indian army as Dentists. So, it totally depends on the students who want to learn and grow in life and college will help you with all the academics and practical knowledge.

Sorry to say, there is no hostel facility available at present for this college. There is one which is under construction and will soon be ready to use. There are innumerable PGs available nearby, some also provides food. They also maintain immense security for the students. Apart from that, the college owns a canteen in their campus area, which is open for doctors and students. All kind of regular foods are available here from breakfast to dinner. They also do home delivery at night to the respective PGs where students are lodged. Students can also opt for any other homemade food delivery which is quite prevalent in burdwan.

There are numerous hotels and restaurants available which provide healthy and delicious foods. The pg is separate for boys and girls and the owners strictly maintain the safety and security of the tenants. The senior and junior roommates are very friendly and everyone stays just like a family, helping each other in difficult times and also enjoying after the exams get over.

Burdwan Dental College and Hospital consists of an old building and two new buildings each of 5 storeys. The academic building is separate from the hospital. Each floor consists of a separate department and after initial examination of each patient in the ground floor of the new building; they are allotted to their respective treatment departments. There are approximately 50-60 chairs in each department. Each of the building is equipped with 4 high quality corporate lifts and there are also spacious stairways. Each floor has 4 washrooms and separate teachers' room and locker rooms. All students who have been allocated clinical duties are allotted their respective lockers, where they can keep the dental instruments and materials. The huge spacious departments not only help students to learn about the details of dentistry in a clutter less way, but also maintain the social distance between patients.

Each department is equipped with its own autoclave and fumigator, which sanitise the departments every day after the patients leave. There is also a huge central library where you can get any book related to Dentistry and medicine. The air conditioned library also has arrangements for students to read sitting there any book they want from the library. The most interesting part is there is a minor-OT attached to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery which is equipped with world class facilities and services. All the maxillofacial accident cases and the tumour and cyst surgeries are performed with utmost care and attention there. There is an auditorium classroom where all the seminars and workshops are conducted by the eminent personalities. Each year gets their respective classrooms all of which are equipped with projector and smart class facilities. The laboratories are also spacious and allow approximately 100 students to work at a time. The college also has a huge playground attached with its campus, where every year sports championship is organised.

Being in the field of medicine, one has to put way too much effort in academics and practical classes to become a successful doctor in the future, so the college life is mainly focused in educating us. Everyone is very hard working and enjoys their studies. But, our college organises fun activities also like- fresher party, fest, sports championship, annual picnic, saraswati puja etc. The fest "Sensation" is organised for consecutive two days where the students enjoy a lot in cultural programs, fun activities, concerts and DJ nights. Very famous bands are invited and the concerts are a lit. All these functions are organised totally within the huge college campus itself, so the security is not hampered. Fresher's welcome party is organised every year.

The sports event is another most awaited event of the year, where every activity are organised in between the years and the professors take part and in short, everyone enjoys it. The Saraswati Puja is organised every year and the entire college is decorated by the first year students with the help of seniors. Burdwan is itself famous for saraswati puja since, there are too many colleges there. Every college organises their own puja and sends an invitation to all the rest. I will say, don't miss a chance to get astonished with the grand endeavour of the celebration of Saraswati Puja in Burdwan. A harmonious relationship between the seniors and juniors. All the seniors are super friendly and will always help you out in academics and practical. They will guide you all throughout the first year with suggesting books, mostly asked questions in exams and everything.
