Mount Carmel College B.Com Review By Ginu George

It has been almost 9 years that I have passed out from Mount Carmel College (MCC). It is been a memorable three years of experience which I had with MCC. It is a girl's only autonomous college run by Carmelite Sisters. A college with strict rules, regulation and well-disciplined college. The college has various international accreditations to its credit and has been associated with many institutions such as Clevergence Pvt Ltd, National Law School of Indian University and with many other. This international association helps and provides opportunity for the students to enroll for courses with these institutions as an exchange program. The college provides all the admission details on the cut off marks and admission guidelines in the college website. The management is very systematic, organised and approachable to all students and parents.

I am very happy to complete by B.Com in Mount Carmel College in 2012 and the course did not have any entrance exam. The students are chosen purely based on merit. Students with more than 85% will be called for personal interview and based on marks and personal interview the students are selected for the course. MCC is one of the best-known colleges in Bangalore for girls and it a sister run college. The college has highly experienced faculties with rich subject and research experience. B.Com in MCC falls under top 30 in India and it was one of the top colleges in Bangalore. This made me decide to take up the course in Bangalore. All the subjects taught in the B.Com course are well structured and syllabus were updated and as per the expectation. The course has placements from various tax, finance and banking companies based out in Bangalore and in others parts of India.

Department of commerce is one of the largest departments in Mount Carmel College with around 20+ faculties. The college has only one campus in Bangalore with the total strength of around 100 + faculties. Most of the teachers are well experienced and been associated with the institution for more than 10 years and the average years of experience is around 7 years. More than 70% of the faculties are PhD holders and others are pursuing their PhD. All the faculties are well trained and experienced hence there teaching and communication skills are extremely good. All the faculties have rich experience in research, publication and presentation. Some of the faculties having corporate experience add to their teaching abilities.

The college has as an excellent placement cell which coordinates with corporate for placements. The placement cell also organises various talks and training programs for the students which helps us to get prepared for the interview. The cell also conducts mock interviews, group discussion and mock personal interview which enable students to perform well for the interview. Some of the top companies which come for placement are Accenture, IBM, Atkins, ANZ, Capegemini and so on. Our batch was fortunate that there were few students hired by Google which paid the highest pay of Rs. 8,00,000 PA and average salary received was Rs. 5,00,000 PA. Since its undergraduate programs not all students sit for placements as many wants to pursue their post graduation. So out of 400 B.Com students, 200 students were placed by various IT and financial companies.

The college has two blocks of hostel for students who come from other states. The blocks are called as junior and senior block. The junior block is meant for fresher and most of the rooms are 4/5 sharing rooms. Very few rooms are two sharing and with a common bathroom. There is a lounge available for students who can use it for studying and to complete the assignment. Generally, the lights are off in rooms by 9.00PM and those who want to stay up for completing the class work then they can use the lounge which is otherwise known as common room. The senior block is meant for final year students were all the rooms are two sharing. These rooms have other facilities like plug points inside the room and also lights can be ON until whatever time they want. Both the hostel has wardens who come for round everyday and to monitor the students. There is also a mess in the ground floor of senior block were breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner are been served. The hostel and college also have securities 24*7 to ensure safety and protection of the students.

The college is spread across 20 acres of land and college is known for its green and cleanliness. The campus is not so big but it is well maintained campus with 3 or 4 kiosks and canteens were students can grab their tea, coffee, snacks, breakfast and lunch. The college also has other facilities like medical room or otherwise known as sick room with a doctor where students if unwell can make use of this facility and consult the Doctor. The college also has a library and students have an access to the library with a library card. Students also have an option to borrow book for duration of 2 weeks. The library has wide range of books from subject based to fiction and non-fiction-based books. Also books on competitive exams are available which students can use to prepare for their exams. Almost all the classes are equipped with LCD projector has most of the faculties have moved to PPT pattern of teaching.

The campus life in MCC is completely different as it is all girls' college. The college as a different level of freedom and vibe. The college has its restrictions on the dress code, this is to maintain the discipline and ensure students do not wear clothes which are revealing. There is an inter-collegiate fest which is most look forward fest in the campus. During this time the colleges across India are invited to participate for various events and programs. There is both business and cultural programs. During this fest the college is filled with food stalls and other accessories and clothes stall. Apart from these each department also have their annual fest which is conducted and limited to the department.
