Government College of Education aims at the holistic development of future teachers. The college follows strict norms. Some strict rules and regulations are to be followed by every student. This college was established in 1954, for providing proper teaching training to future teachers. The admission procedure depends upon the sum accumulation of marks of 10th standard, 12th, and also your graduation percentage. So, you have to fill in the application form and again counseling will be done for admission depending upon your merit number. They even provide you the opportunity to choose from different colleges at the time of counseling. As there are various other B.Ed. colleges as well, under the Panjab University accreditation only. The management is supportive throughout the admission procedure. They are readily available at every step to guide a new student.

I joined as a B.Ed. student. The admission was based upon merit ranking. I have a passion for teaching and after I finished my graduation from Miranda House College, I filled up the application form as soon as it was out. And, luckily at that times, the course was just 1-year duration course. Depending upon your admission rank you are provided with roll-numbers, and hence, divided into groups. These groups end up being your class for next year. I was in section C. the subjects during the course were interesting as well as vast. First of all, you have to choose two major and minor subjects. The subjects in which you want to become a teacher. My major subject was science and my minor one was English. Additionally, you have to choose one additional subject as well. I opted for the computer. There was a drawing class, which was mandatory for all. It was the best part of academic courses.

There were around 30 faculty in the college. Each one of them was dedicated and well-qualified for the posts. All of them had mastery of their respective subjects. They were M.Ed. and Ph.D. degree holders. And additionally, they were having years of teaching experience in this field. There was a single class of 45 min. and teachers made sure to utilize this in making the most out of it. They guide you at every step. Even, one teacher is assigned to each section as class teachers. Not only just in college but also during our teaching practice at schools, they were always present around. They set-up an example of a teacher, that any student studying their wants to become like in future.

There was a placement cell in the college. But, it was meant for advantage more for the M.Ed. or Ph.D. students rather than B.Ed. students. As B.Ed. isn’t enough to get a job. Additionally, you have to qualify central teacher eligibility examination (CTET) which is considered as the basic qualification to become a teacher. But, as I said, the placement cell was active throughout the year, and hence, during the last months, there was a placement fair organized. In this principals and teachers of different reputed colleges participated. Tests and interview process was conducted to select teachers. Even, I appeared for a few. But, surely wasn’t selected as I was eligible. Some seniors got placed in reputed schools like DAV, DPS, Ryan, etc. it is overall a nice experience, to face tests and interviews as it prepares you well for the future.

There is a hostel facility for students who come from faraway places. There is separate hostel for boys and girls. There are around 14-15 rooms in the hostel. Each room can accommodate around 4-5 students. As the rooms are very spacious and well-equipped with infrastructures like almirah and study tables. There are around 65 students in total in the hostel. The hostel has a big lawn in front. I especially loved spending time on this beautiful lawn. The charges are Rs. 5000 for 6 months. And an additional payment for food i.e. about Rs. 90 per day. The hostel is completely safe and secure; there is proper timing after which no one is allowed to go out. The head of wings is made by a voting procedure. The food provided in the mess is of great quality as well. So, one doesn’t need to stress over staying when coming from faraway places.

The college is located in sector 20. The overall area is 6 acres, with a beautiful building in the center. There is a vast auditorium, where every Wednesday morning assembly is conducted by different sections of students every week. There is a big library with all the latest books and magazines. Even, it has all the main newspapers as well. Students can get it to register on their names, using the issued ID cards. There are a computer lab and a drawing room as well. This is a 2-floor building and classes are on the top floor. Whereas, other facilities as a library, computer lab and laboratory are on the ground floor. The hostel is around 500 meters from the college main building. There is a massive sports playground in the front of the college building. The annual sports meet is conducted here every year. There is a medical emergency room as well, where you can get medicines for the basic symptoms, and a doctor is available every day.

Overall, my experience at this college was good. Despite, all the strict norms, we enjoyed it a lot. Especially during the teaching practice period. It was for 3 months, in which you have to go to schools to teach. Similar to teachers in real life. That part is very exciting. My school was an all-girls school. It was near to the college. Different competitions were happening all around the year. Like debates, calligraphy, drawing, etc. the final demonstration for teaching is taken at the college only, where invigilators from different colleges come to witness your teaching skills. The sports meet was though a great festival in this college. Teachers and students actively participated during the event. So, the college not just gives you theoretical knowledge but also aims at the holistic development of its students. As, when you leave college, you are already a teacher in the true sense.
