Mount Carmel College B.Sc Review By Ann Mary Cherian

Mount Carmel College is run by Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa. My years in the college were between 2005 to 2008. Mount Carmel admission process is fairly simple; we could download the admission form from the official website and had to face an interview with the principal. The college management is very helpful and has a robust process. Mount Carmel is often touted as the best women's college in Bangalore, it is also one of the first colleges to be awarded an autonomy status. It was during my stint there the NAAC accreditation was happening.

I applied for B.Sc in Economics, Mathematics and Statistics. Thankfully I got this stream. This stream is a rare combination and many people vouch for the variety of opportunities it opens up for the students. You can choose for a career in any of the subject or move completely into a PGDM course. The course was well designed and planned. It was very exciting to learn Statistics and understand in depth about Economics concepts. My cousin's friend who passed out from this stream suggested this course to me. And since I felt that it is a nice combination I decided to go ahead with this course.

The faculty of Mount Carmel College is talked about for their rich experience in teaching and vast subject knowledge. Each faculty has a good mix of experienced teachers and teachers who are starting off their career. Most of the teachers hold a double degree and their knowledge on the subject is very comprehensive. The teachers share a good rapport with the students and we were ever welcome to go to them post class hours for any doubts that we have.

The placement cell of Mount Carmel College works very proactively to get the best of companies to come to the campus for placements. However in my batch most of the students preferred to do a post graduation and so very few students went through the process. Also some attended these interviews to have a better understanding of how these interviews are conducted. Many students got placed and the average pay package was Rs. 5 Lakhs per annum.

I am proud to say I was in college hostel for one year. There are 2 wings in the hostel, one for junior block with 4-5 students sharing a room and the senior block which has twin sharing rooms. The fees for the hostel are very nominal and very neat and homely in its functioning. The food is balanced and students can opt for a Non veg or a veg menu. There is security 24*7 for the safety for the students.

Mount Carmel College has a fairly large campus. The campus has a very large library, well ventilated and big class rooms and a big auditorium. The basketball court of the college is a very happening place where students gather to have their lunch or for general chit chat. The canteen provides very basic snacks and has a tea/ coffee counter. There were also some vendors who come and set up food stalls in the campus. There was a doctor available during college hours for any medical emergency that the students may have.

I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 years with Mount Carmel and I only have fond memories of the campus, the friends I made and for the learning. The college has a variety of clubs initiated and run by teachers and students. Each department hosts annual fest and the most awaited fest of Mount Carmel is Cul-Ah! which is held annually in January every year. The whole campus looks forward to Cul-Ah! as it brings students from other colleges across India. Cul-Ah! has many competitions in several categories, but what attracts most of the crowd is the Best Speaker Competition and the Fashion Show.
