Mount Carmel College M.A Review By Arya Choudhary

Mounts, as we all call it! I attended this college for my postgraduate degree in the year 2010. Initially, when I landed in Bangalore, I was quite puzzled as to where to study, I visited so many colleges and finally settled with Mount Carmel Bangalore and today I can proudly say that the decision I took on 1st of July 2010 was worth it. Mount Carmel is an autonomous college affiliated to Bangalore University. Mount Carmel College Bangalore admission procedure for Post graduation in Economics was not so complicated, I had to go through an interview process with the department HOD and other faculty and once they approved, I had to make quite a few run-around admission office which was hassle-free. I was new to the college as well as the city and I must admit that the faculty was very helpful, they guided me on the entire admission procedure.

There are so many different departments housed in the college and you have an option to choose your area of interest. I completed my Post Graduation in Economics and when I stepped into the real corporate world, I realized the course curriculum that was taught to us was a bit theoretical, it could have been more industry-specific. But then again, I had few colleagues who wanted to make their career in academics, for them the course outline was helpful. So, I feel it could have been the mix of both – academics and industry oriented. But I cannot deny the fact that it definitely gave me a solid background and eventually got a great job.

I must admit the faculty in this college is very good. They are well qualified and most of them have been teaching there for more than 10 years. Their efforts are genuine and the way of teaching is unique. One of my teachers used to divide the class hour into teaching and revision. The first half-hour was for her to teach and the next half hour was our turn to explain what we understood. Initially, we felt she was being rude and strict to us but later we realized that the trick was very helpful as we were getting prepared for semesters simultaneously. Also, it helped boost our confidence and approach on how to present ourselves. The first three semesters were general subjects, but the last semester was the one where they made us understand what opportunities we have and exposed us to a real-time research project.

There is a scope of improvement in this section of the college, especially for postgraduates. They have good placement options for Graduate degree, but they lack the same for postgraduates. Not many companies visited the college for placement. As a result, we had to struggle on our own for the job. This area needs significant improvement by the college administration.

The college provides an airy and well-ventilated hostel facility. I might not be able to share my own experience here as I stayed in a PG accommodation but I had friends in the hostel too so I can share what I heard from them. It’s a classic hostel with bunk beds and three times food. Hostel rules were very strict in terms of curfew. They follow strict timelines by which students have to be back in the hostel or else they stay out. Food wasn’t that bad and the good thing is you get food on time. But if one cannot stay within strict timelines, college hostel is certainly not an option for them.

The college has got a huge lush green campus with ample space for sports activities. There is a basketball and football court in the college campus. Besides, there is a well-equipped stadium for outdoor games which is located in the vicinity of the college. There is a separate block for MBA with a library on the ground floor. Along with course books, the library also houses many magazines and daily newspapers available in all languages. The campus has three auditoriums with a huge seating facility and a sophisticated sound system used for annual functions and events. An area of campus is dedicated to the canteen where we use to relish delicious food. The canteen has a combination of South and North Indian meals along with evening snacks. Also, there is a chaat corner where you get all kind of junks to hog on.

The campus offers a lot of extra-curricular activities in the form of Annual Sports event and Annual Events. Cul-Ah - an annual event that is very famous in the entire Bangalore is hosted by Mount Carmel College every year where students from different colleges are invited to participate and showcase their talent. This event is also an opportunity to meet new people and expose yourself to new knowledge.
