National Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Abhishek Singh

NIT Rourkela is located in Odisha. I got admission into National Institute of Technology Rourkela based on my GATE score. It's a newly established NIT which has shown a tremendous increase in its ranking among all the NIT's. Just like similar to other NIT's it is also semi-government in nature. And here the syllabus is very well structured to meet the present industrial techniques and is very up to date. There was an issue for the delivery of the things that we used to order online. There was complaint about the under-construction road so delivery was quite impossible. Here the internet speed is impressive and you can easily connect to the Wi-Fi at every corner of the campus.

I chose transportation engineering as my branch for completing my masters as transportation engineering provides broad scope. The worst thing that I have faced in this college is the mandatory attendance of 85% which 10% more than required by other NIT's. A senior of mine suggested me to opt for this college and course as the quality of teaching here is good and the college provides a platform to do deep research in your area of interest. Transportation work is something that never gets old, the more the country is developing, there will be more opportunities for the transportation engineers.

Though I never got the chance to sit in the front and I've never maintained the proper class notes still I managed to pass my semester exams with good sgpa as the teaching method of professor's there was very practical so you get to understand the teachings in the first go only. During my session there were total of 30 faculties in the civil branch. There were some teachers who were highly experienced and some were newcomers who were appointed as teachers but hardly any difference in the teaching method could be seen. All the faculties who were teaching me were holding the degree of PhD in various subjects.

NIT Rourkela Placement rate is 53% only. The top 10% student of my batch bag the package of around 20 LPA, the average package that could be observed in this college is 6 LPA. The placement is completely based on the branch that you have chosen core companies like Tata Steel, HPCL, IOCL and many more used to visit the college. 70% of the student used to get placed in the most renowned company and rest of them prefer to pursue to do PhD. The procedure of placement includes short listing of C.V, online writing test, G.D and personal interview. For the entire method, most of the companies have a direct visit to the campus but some of them used to organise the placement at different location other than the college itself.

NIT Rourkela Hostels offers the separate building for both the boy's and girl's, the room that they provided us was quite spacious but there was no proper air circulation and because of that our room used to be hot and humid. The best part of the hostel life was that the single room was provided to all the students so there was no issue for the privacy and self study. I was quite happy with the quality of hostel food as they provided different dishes on every single day and the taste was quite similar to the home cooked food. There were separate chambers for both the vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Quite frequently I would use to face power cut but it was for a very short period of time like for 10-15 minutes.

Talking about the infrastructure, NIT Rourkela Campus Area is the biggest among all the NIT's and it stood at the 2nd position after IIT Kharagpur. The campus has lush green atmosphere and is consists of student friendly surroundings. There is medical facility availed by the college to the students in an emergency. The library is huge and is comprised of the books that are informative and are of standard quality. The campus is well equipped with all kinds of sports playground from basketball court to football play ground. The laboratories are well furnished with the essential equipment. We have a Nescafe shop located at midway into the academic block where all the students and faculties gather to have coffee or chai.

During my time the environment of college was fulfilled with brilliant mind, most of my classmates were brilliant in both the academic and curricular field. They all were having all round development skills. There were different coaches assigned for the different games for the proper training to the students, the annually held inter NIT sports fest brings laurels to the institute. NITR has its Techno- Management fest “Innovision”, cultural fest “NITR-UTSAV" and its receives active participation from the enormous amount of students. I had my best 2 years in this college and made many sweet memories here.
