Hostels at Jadavpur University are unimaginably cheap

Jadavpur University (JU) is one of the premier institutions in India, known for its strong emphasis on Engineering, Science and Humanities. The return of investment JU offers for BE / B.Tech courses is incomparable to any other engineering colleges in India. My overall experience in JU is average. I chose BE in Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering at JU because of its placement scenario. Also choosing JU means you have to pay very less fees. The overall tuition fees in approximately 10,000 and only for IT it’s little over 1 lakh rupees, which is still very low compared to other engineering colleges. Even the hostel fees are unimaginable. The faculty is excellent, both campus are good in their own way, scope for higher studies are available, research opportunities are available, internships are not as high as placements but some students get good internships too.

Entry Requirement / Eligibility: I opted for WB JELET in 2023 and got admission through lateral entry after completing diploma. For those who are currently in diploma course, or thinking to do diploma after class 12th may be because you didn't get the college you want by WBJEE, then I would suggest you to prepare for JELET and get into a top notch college. In JELET you have to secure a rank under 50-60 (may vary) to get your choice of course at JU. Study and practice regularly. Use your time efficiently to balance between all the subjects in JELET. In 2023 our syllabus included Math, Physics, Chemistry and fundamentals of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Also please keep in mind that only studying for JELET and not giving attention towards diploma subjects can bring in a bad effect. My motive for enrolling in the program: I enrolled in IEE at JU because of my interest in electronics. My rank in JELET was 24, my first choice was ETCE, but in 2023 ETCE was closed at 11 or 14 and my second choice was IEE which I got. I came to know closing rank of IT went to 26. So, if I would have chosen IT I would have got that, but I chose my priority. Also my diploma was in ETCE at RKM Shilpamandira.

Professors are highly qualified and some of their teaching skills are excellent. You can get a detailed page of their qualifications, publications, even their CVs at official website of JU. Most of them have Ph.D and some of them have ME /M.Tech degree. You will enjoy attending class of some professors. Majority of them doesn't ask for high attendance. If you keep good attendance i.e. equal to or over 80% then you can seat for extra class test which will allow you to score good marks and you may increase your average marks based on best two out of three class tests conducted and added in the semester.

There is a placement cell at JU "Training and Placement Cell (FET)"; you can search this name on LinkedIn. The office of training and placement is located in the main campus of JU. No doubt the placements are the highlight of this University. In IEE we have a placement record of 100% every year with students getting placed with average package 16.6LPA, median package 15.8LPA and highest 46.4LPA. Some of the recruiting companies are Paytm, Amazon, Accenture, Samsung Engineering, Tata Digital, Texas Instruments, Wood, Pwc, and many more. Hostels at JU are unimaginably cheap. In Salt Lake campus there is boys and girls hostels available. For seat rent and electricity charges you have to pay Rs. 300 and for mess’s advance you have to pay Rs. 4000/- along with hostel admission charges. If you don't get hostel you can stay in nearby PGs, which will cost Rs. 2000-5000 per month. At Salt Lake campus students are provided with single rooms with Wi-Fi facilities.

At Salt Lake campus we have five BE courses and all other ME / M.Tech courses along with Ph.D. The five BE courses are Construction Engineering, IT, Instrumentation & Electronics Engineering, Power Engineering, and Printing Engineering. IEE and Power Engineering are in a same block, IT has a separate block and printing and construction has their block. Building is old but recently it was colored. We have lifts in every building. Coming to its library, it’s very good. There is a large reading area in the library where students can pick up books and read, and also they can bring laptops and note books for reading. There is also a room full of computers where you can prepare any presentations, code, and do other works. Main highlight of Salt Lake campus is its ground CAB.

It is not as vibrant as the main campus, but in its own way it’s more peaceful than the main campus. The location of the Salt Lake campus is not good. You have to walk too much. The bus stop at Chingrighata is too far from this campus. This campus is not crowed at all. Major event at Salt Lake campus is CIIPPUS and one technical event SRIJAN. You can join clubs like Jadavpur University Science Club (JUSC), IEEE, chess club, photography club, etc.
