St Joseph's College Devagiri placement cell nurtures students for job interviews

St Joseph's College (autonomous), Devagiri is a well known college in Kozhikode city. It has showed its excellence in cultural, sports and academic fields. It gives equal importance to both academics and extracurricular activities. All the faculties in each department are well qualified and trained. Since, the college is autonomous one exam will be conducted in each six months marking the end of the semester. After the exams, results will be declared within 4-5 weeks. Though the fee structure here is high compared to other colleges in Calicut, it still provides all the facilities in regards to the fee given. The students are actively involved in politics and social related clubs. College also provides various scholarships namely prathiba, E-Grant etc.

The course I enrolled in is B.Sc Computer Science and Mathematics. Very few colleges in Kozhikode offers double degree. This course gives equal weightage to both Computer Science and Mathematics. The course fee in 22500 per semester. There will be practical labs for both Computer Science and Mathematics. The course comes under the department of mathematical sciences. This is a newly launched course in 2022. The students who chose Science for plus two are eligible to apply for this course. Passing percentage of this course is 35%. Students above 85% can be included in the merit list. There will be four allotments for the admission. The students will be admitted as per the allotment list. Students will be called even after the final allotment if there is a vacancy in the classroom. Students could even change the department based on the vacancy and the priority. The main advantage of taking this course is that there will be a wide range of opportunities available after the graduation. Students could either choose Mathematics field or Computer Science field. Notes will be provided and timely completion of portions is also ensured.

Faculties in the department are very well educated and trained. There are teachers with qualifications like Ph.D, M.Tech, MCA, M.Sc etc. All teachers have a very good teaching style and are very dedicated. Written notes are provided for Mathematics subjects whereas PPT will be shared for computer based subjects. Students could even take lecture notes. Internal marks will be provided by teachers based on different criteria. Some teachers may consider the assignment mark by giving assignment to the students whereas some may include note submission for assignment marks. Teachers guide the students for placement, project, etc. Teachers’ gives full support to the department fest named EFEX.

The college owns a placement cell with in-charge teachers. Their coaching makes students efficient to attend placement interviews. Mock interviews will be organised by the cell and resume correction will also be done. In each department a teacher will be in charge of the placement activities. This teacher gives the students all information about the placements and helps in making resumes. The students will be given the practice for placements from semester 5 onwards. Many companies like Wipro, TCS, and Accenture, Federal bank, ICICI, South Indian bank etc. also have arrived as recruiters. Many students from the college have been recruited in these companies. Students of this college have been placed in Indian railways also. The average salary package offered is 3 – 5 LPA.

The main drawback of the college is that the college hostel facility is available only to the UG and PG boys and PG girls but not to UG girls. UG girls are usually accommodated in private hostels run by nuns or as pain guest. UG and PG boys are accommodated in the same hostel named Tagore. The PG girls are accommodated in the hostel named Chavara run by nuns. The food and menu here is so satisfying. In this college most of the students are day scholars. So, therefore a residential camp will be organized for the students in their first year to make them interact with each other. This is a three day camp with fun filled activities and interactions. The facilities in the hostel are so good with lots of bathrooms, washing area dormitory and other rooms. There will be celebrations for hostellers on a separate day before the college celebration.

There are three buildings in total named as A, B and C. The first one is the aided block. This building has been there since the year the college was constructed. This building is for the aided course. It is in this building where the office and the principal chamber and library are situated. Since the building is old enough the infrastructure is also kind of old. The classrooms have two doors and are a very wide one. The library is also situated in this block. The library is one of the fascinating things about the college. It has been a sensation recently. It is a renovated one. It has three floors providing a wide space. There are very large varieties of books here. The second one is the B block. This building has six floors and an underground. This is for the self financing courses. It was build recently and therefore it has modern technologies like TV and speakers in classrooms. The availability of TV in the classroom makes it easy for the teachers to take classes or to present PPTs. There are two computer labs in this building. There are about 150-200 computers in the lab. The lab is centralized air conditioned. The third block is the C block. This is the newly constructing block. This is for the department of commerce and business management exclusively. There are about 13 floors in this building with a bridge from B to C. The construction is still going on. But as far it comes with all new technologies.

The overall campus life here is well balanced. There are equal importance for academics as well as extracurricular. Every student here receives coaching for whatever the potential is. The college provides many opportunities for the students to showcase their talents. There are many department fests happening in the college everyday for the students to chill and relax. There are many places in the college where the students could sit and enjoy. The infrastructure here is so pleasing that we could learn everything better. There are student politics too where students could know more about the original politics and what is happening in the college. It builds up their leadership qualities. There are many fests that are organised in the college namely Nirvana, Efex, Envy etc. These are different department fests for the students within the college and outside the college. Out of these Nirvana is the most famous. It is a national level fest which is organised for one full day. College has won various trophies in fields of arts and sport. In the last B zone competition college has won the over- rolling trophy.
