AMC Engineering College B.Tech Review By Jagdish Kumar

I passed from AMC Engineering College in 2012 and things might have changed since then. The college was welcoming and so we many monkeys that one can find inside the campus. The college is close to Bannerghatta National Park and that was primarily the reason why there were so many monkeys who used to jump college walls and enter the college premises. Faculties were poor but the crowd was amazing. North Indians have found this college more interesting than the south Indians as the ratio of students from North was close to 30%. If I put it in the ways of pros and cons then pros would be great campus, faculties for mathematics and programming, labs were well equipped and excellent crowd. It’s not that college just has pros there are many cons as well and they are the worst administrative staff, placements were quite poor, and one of the worst canteens.

Too hectic was the schedule and attendance too were severe. I think this is common with most of the colleges in Bangalore but still many students were fed up and were ok with letters going at their home because that was the max that college did. The college used to run for 5 days a week and 9.15 to 4pm were the classes’ time. However, it was a hell of a task because lunch break in between was just 30 minutes and break between the lectures was of 5 minutes. I wasn’t impressed with the way they organized classes and exams.

If I take out some, majority of them hardly had any experience. They would first learn the topic themselves and then will come and teach us. I agree this might be hard to believe but this is an honest confession and I hope the faculty should have admitted that. We tried our best to listen to their classes but trust me their teaching hardly made any sense. Moreover, none of them were available outside the classes. Whatever you want to know, classes were the only place where you can ask your doubts to them. Students had to find their own ways and seriously it was quite poor indeed as one can expect literally nothing from the faculty.

In recent past the things have changed but it wasn’t the same in our time. Not many companies and more importantly not many core companies. Tech companies always have some smaller roles for which they are in hunt and we were fished through that hunt. A job of 2.5-3 lakh per annum at the start could have enticed some but definitely not me. Jobs were up for grabs for almost 80% of the students but same roles, same kind of jobs on which not many agreed. More than students’ ability it was the recruiters’ demands that were given more weightage and sincerely speaking such placements meant nothing at all.

I have already mentioned that infrastructure of the college needs no mention. Hostel being a part of it was a beauty in itself. White color crisp building that had almost all the facilities that our North Indian friends enjoyed to the core. What else one can ask for as the canteen was the worst but the food served at hostel was just like home made food. Students had timing issues as the college is located too far and no matter what it was impossible to cross the college gate after a stipulated time. Many of friends told me that they made peace with hostel guard but the college gate guards were too adamant.

Has anyone seen Victoria memorial of Kolkata, the college building definitely must have inspired from there or from some parliament. It looked like a parliament house then and still today it’s the same. Other than canteen everything was like a piece of artistry at the campus. Canteen too was built nicely but would serve stale food. Bangalore being a garden city, there was a huge garden inside the campus. The playing field too was excellent. Internal factors were such that one never has to step out for any of their needs during college hours. Now talking about nearby places, it was close to hills. 2 kms from the college you can go to Champakdama. The temple at the hill was occupied with college students before the exams. Prayers were the only thing that saved us survives at AMC. Jokes apart, college’s infrastructure from inside was 11 on 10 but the location was way too far from the main city. Even buses hardly operated and college bus was the only option if we didn’t have our vehicles.

The college hardly has any fest which is so uncanny from an engineering college’s point of view. After a lot of request the tech fest was organized but hardly any people came to watch us showcase our projects. Weighing in on friendship and having fun with the students of the college was the only time pass because to talk about college’s event or fests, there’s hardly anything to talk about.
