National Institute of Mass Communication and Journalism Review By Shail Sanghvi

While searching for the PG in Mass communication, I searched for over 100s of colleges. Symbiosis was one of the best but NIMCJ a lesser name than that give its students the same opportunities. Looking at all the permutations and combinations I decided to join it and can say that I took a wise decision of joining NIMCJ. Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication is again a 1-year course and by the time I entered my 20s, I was already a postgraduate student. My school friends were not even graduated by this time and I have a PG degree and a settled life. The college is good as it offers to learn that no other campus can. We are always up for new things and every day was a new day for us at the campus. The girl’s ratio was higher and this is probably the only college where I have seen it.

NIMCJ has specialization in various streams like electronic media, print media, radio journalism, and filmmaking. Here again, it was six months at the campus and six months of internship. Radio journalism enticed me initially but I changed my stream to print media. One gets a month after joining the internship to change the stream and that is more than enough time to see what interests you the most. A nice gem of a course that had everything from tough learning to enjoyment.

Classy but not massy. Just 7 professors for our entire course and the student’s ratio were a little higher. Just if they could add up a few more members it will be good for both. Faculties were different from what I have seen as they would keep making us do the things that sometimes annoyed me but that’s the way. Keeping patience is the key in this field as one can go mind-struck but how to deal with it was the key in this course.

Almost 100% as we all got placed to our respective specialization field. Never knew media is much beyond TV as there are a lot of companies from print media that need so much of manpower. So, if there’s someone who is in hurry to build a fortune for themselves then Mass Communication is a nice course, and NIMCJ definitely one of the best colleges that will give wings to your dreams by getting you placed in some of the best business houses in the same field.

College doesn’t have a hostel of its own but Gujarat University hostel have reservations for students of NICMJ. The hostel is not up to the especially when I compare it to some of the private hostels of the city. Also, Ahmedabad is not that expensive and one can rent an apartment at an affordable price. CG Road and other areas have a lot of PGs for students which are affordable. Ahmedabad is a foodie delight so rather than joining a mess one should try the food that this beautiful city has to offer. There are quite a few outlets including the outlet of Sasuma near the college. For those who are a fan of Gujarati thali, the college has a lot of restaurants that offer a great Gujarati Thali in the range of 60 to 300.

College is close-packed as it’s not that big. Among facilities, it has a digital library that can work wonders for your course. Along with digital, there’s also a conventional library but to be frank I never visited there. Who goes for Dal Chawal after having a pudding. Then there was a beautiful electronic media and a print media lab. For group discussion, there was a conference room. A workstation was installed at the campus known as the editing room. The most important thing that a mass comm college must have is a studio. The studio of the college had virtual background slides and we created reports using those backgrounds. There was a huge incubation center and last but not the least a basketball court to ease off some pressure from the drawing board.

My name will still be there in the bench that I used to sit. The laptop friendly bench was my favorite and even after the classes I used to finish my reports at the classrooms. The college used to get over at 5 pm but I never left the college premises before 7. The next day was already planned and we were taught to do everything in advance. The new age journalism is ain’t easy and we were made tough for that. We saw college not just as an opportunity but as an office which will teach us how our future will be. I made friends who all are doing good and take a note that media people are the youngest entrepreneurs in India.
