The new norm that engineering studies are best in Bangalore landed me to GAT. Comed-K is one of those entrances that is open to all and it’s because of that, I decided to take which ever college I get through the score. Less score meant GAT and some colleges even lesser than that for me but GAT being a brand name I thought of moving miles to study here. Understanding south Indian accent was a task for me and then the education system which was entirely different. Attendance system at GAT was unbelievable as one has to attend 75% classes at any cost. Holidays were beyond me as just 10 days before the exams we got holidays and on festivals too the holidays were quite less. Quite a few outsiders were a part of the college during my batch and for that one should thanks their marketing team which has done a tremendous job. Overall, the college wasn’t worth much as a grad degree from GAT will hardly land you to jobs of your liking.

Academics part was much difficult as the syllabus was too wide. Few unnecessary topics and subjects even. The college had one excuse that they want to see an overall engineer rather than just an engineer. Jack of all trades is what they basically meant and in engineering this is the worst concept. Extra classes were like a regular stuff at GAT because student hardly understood and for that extra and more extra classes were organized. It wasn’t of much help as most students studied on own and one has to have friends and friends in seniors to help you out.

The notion or cognitive that south Indian teaching and teachers are the best was shaken. Their accent is tough for students coming from North or West to understand. Also, for the faculty everything above Mumbai is North and therefore I too was considered as a North Indian at the college. The treatment to South Indian students and outsider students varied. I was not attached with my faculty nor did I expect them to help me out in the time of crisis. Make friends and that would be the only way to get a degree from GAT as faculty were pathetic.

I came to Bangalore with a lot of expectations as I will be working in some of the leading tech companies. The college arranged a nice internship and also the placement cell worked hard but still the placement rate was close to 50%. I was among those who scored consistently well but still the college didn’t have answers on why I can’t be placed. Nazara Technologies where I offered internship asked me to join them but their specialization is building gaming software’s which wasn’t my forte and I had to deny that offer. Thus, placements too were not matching with the top colleges of Bangalore. GAT claims to be one of the best but they aren’t good at any department.

The hostel was luckily inside the campus and that helped a lot as the college location is such that one can’t find any commuting or regular stuff close to the college. They allow hostellers to keep their bikes and I had to get one from the second year as hostel food was not something that could be consumed daily. In breakfast only the south Indian 3-4 dishes will be served the entire week. In lunch a thali with variety and in dinner we had some delicious dishes but not always. At least twice a week, we had to step out for dinner and the in time was 9 pm but one can manage if they enter by 10pm. The warden would come daily and take the attendance and if students are found partying inside the rooms, an official complaint will be sent to the college management.

The college is relatively but they have made it up with modern labs, digital library and security cameras at all corners of the college. The auditorium was air-conditioned and events could easily be held at the auditorium as the college strength was not that high and auditorium was spacious. On the whole, it was a nice college but quite small and that made college had to give away the sporting facilities. Instead of having one ground they have converted that into two so boys and girls can have their own grounds. However, in the process the grounds have become so smaller that it was not enough to play sports like Football or cricket.

In campus there was a differentiation seen among the students. The south Indian students or the Kannda students were comfortable only in speaking in their own language so we had to make friends with hostellers. Hostel life was the best takeaway if I had to say one positive about the campus life.
