Goa College of Engineering B.Tech Review By Saumya Doshi

I studied at GCE for four years, and if it weren't for selection in IIT, I would have studied for all six years. My perspective is a little different from others as I have seen both the pros and cons of this college and will share them both. There are seven branches at GCE. Some were good, while some were terrible. Thankfully for me, that IT branch was the best of them all and had a nice ratio of girls. Otherwise, though there aren't many female students at GCE. The college is supremely funded, and that can be seen with the new equipment and development being made consistently. GCE has an MOU signed with none other than colleges like IIT Bombay and NIT Surathkal. We were sent there for workshops, and the faculty of those colleges would come and take important sessions and lectures at GCE. The fees of engineering colleges today are so high that it has made engineering almost inaccessible to an average household in India. GCE fees are quite low, and also many scholarships and subsidies are provided to socially and economically challenged people in India.

Academics was like completing many formalities, which was the only worse thing about GCE. At the start of the semester, we were thrown the assignments and projects, and if you escape the submission dates, then boss, you are in some serious trouble. The college has facilitated many things in the course which are need of the hour. The Goa University, though, should be credited for that as many industries have started making their way to our beautiful coastal state, and they have made tie-ups with the college. GCE is one of the oldest pedigrees that have stuck to its root of providing unbiased and proper education to all who take admissions here.

Share of a rotten apple is for all, isn't it? Just like that, some egoistic teachers literally made my life hell. I always look at the positive, though, and more than the egoistic faculty, there were helpful and supportive faculty. Their teaching methods might be a little old, but no shortage of help from them. I used to take personal sessions from them, and likewise, they were available for all the students who went to them. One has to open up, and then they are all yours. When in need, the faculty have gone out of the way to help me. However, some tried their best to make my life as hell as possible.

My dream was to work for MNCs, and unfortunately, they haven't started seeing GCE as a potential place where they will get the right candidate. Indian companies, though don't think so, IT companies like Mindtree, Tata Elexi, and Hexaware have been college partners for long. I think IT had 2 classes of 80 students each and all had a job offer. Thus, close to 100% placement for the IT department at GCE makes it one of the most formidable colleges in Goa and the entire region.

I am glad that I was a local and didn't have to stay at such a filthy hostel. Both boys' and girls' hostels are filthy and one can say that even without entering. The walls of the hostel building need a serious look. My friends used to say that even the rooms aren't good and, my God, the washrooms. However, there were few positive like the food. GCE has students from various states of India, and because GCE wants them to be regular at GCE, they have introduced 4 messes. All are different and serves different cuisines, so you can join the one you feel like. There are messes for South, North, East, and West students. The cooks from those regions have been hired to make delicious food for the students.

One can look at it both ways. Facilities wise, the college has almost everything. Everything is updated with the latest technology as one would not be able to resist but to go to labs as much as they can. The library has been completely digitized, and keeping records has become even simplified. There are rules like one book borrowed has to be returned in a week, or the system will detect you and will be paying fine for that. Coming to the thing that I had issues with were the outer area. There are a lot of open spaces, and the college hasn't bothered to plant some trees to utilize the area and make the campus look greener. Buildings are quite old and are in dire need of some repair work. The staff quarter building has been looked after but what about the student hostels?

If you are from Goa and want to do engineering, there's no better place than GCE. Not just it is superior in education but in co-curricular activities as well. Goa is known for football. The GCE football team has won shields in Goa and other national-level colleges competition. The cultural fest was one of the best as students of all regions were asked to combine and show their state's traditional dance form or skit so that others know about their state. Only if some structural changes in infrastructure are made, then GCE will be one of the best colleges in India.
